국문 초록

민요에서 공동체 의식은 공동작업이 요구되는 일노래나, 상여소리 등의 의례요에서 자주 나타난다. 이때 민요의 기능은 ‘작업의 효율’에 초점이 맞춰져 있으며, 음악 요소들은 그 효율성을 극대화하는 쪽으로 선택된다. 메기는소리는 작업을 지휘하는 기능을, 받는소리는 같은 악구를 반복해서 부르며 작업의 어려움을 이겨내는 기능을 담당한다. 공동체 의식의 직접적 표현은 메기는소리에 집중되며, 모두가 같은 소절을 반복 제창하는 받는소리의 양식은 민요의 공동체성을 드러내는 핵심이다. 일상에서 민요는 긍정적 감정을 배가하고, 부정적 감정은 해소, 승화하는 ‘정서적 기능’을 가지며, 문학적 표현과 음악적 선율진행 등으로 가창자의 예술성을 구현하는 기능도 갖는다. 노랫말에 나타난 철학과 가치관, 자부심은 개인으로부터 점차 더 큰 단위의 공동체로, 나아가 생태계에까지 의식의 경계를 넓힌다. 또 공동체의 단합과 화합을 이끄는 사회적 기능을 통해 개인과 공동체의 일체감을 도모한다.

영문 초록

In folk songs, the sense of community often emerges in work songs that require group labor, or in ritual songs like songs for carrying a bier. In such cases, the function of the folk song focuses on enhancing work efficiency, and musical elements are selected to maximize that effectiveness. The megineun-sori (lead call) functions to direct the work, while the batneun sori (chorus response), which repeats the same musical phrase, helps the workers overcome physical hardships. The expression of communal consciousness is concentrated in the megineun-sori, and the structure of everyone repeatedly echoing the same phrase in the batneun sori is a key characteristic that highlights the communal nature of folk songs. In daily life, folk songs serve an emotional function - amplifying positive feelings while easing or sublimating negative emotions. They also function as a medium for the singer’s artistry through literary expression and musical progression. The philosophies, values, and pride expressed in the lyrics extend one’s awareness from the individual to increasingly larger communities, even to the ecosystem. Moreover, through their social function of fostering unity and harmony within the community, they promote a sense of unity between the individual and the group.
