국문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the semantic functions of the anaphoric use of the a- and the so-series demonstratives in Japanese natural conversation. While previous studies have suggested that the primary distinction between these demonstratives lies in whether the referent is part of the shared knowledge between the speaker and the hearer, the data from natural conversation reveal that this explanation is not always sufficient. This paper argues that the choice between the a- and the so-series demonstratives in anaphoric contexts is not primarily determined by the degree of shared knowledge, but rather by the distinct semantic functions associated with each demonstrative. Specifically, it is proposed that the a-series demonstratives function as de re demonstratives, marking the domain of reality, whereas the so-series demonstratives function as de dicto demonstratives, marking the domain of speech. It is argued that this semantic distinction plays a central role in determining demonstrative choice in anaphora in natural conversation. The present paper also argues that the restrictions on the a-series demonstratives in hypothetical constructions, as well as the limitations on the so-series demonstratives as first-mention anaphora, stem from the fact that the a-series demonstratives belong to the de re domain, while the so-series demonstratives belong to the de dicto domain.

영문 초록

本稿は、日本語の自然会話に見られるア系列およびソ系列指示詞の非直 示用法における意味的機能を考察することを目的とする。ア系列とソ系列の非直示用法の使い分けについては、話し手と聞き手の間で指示対象に関する知識が共有されているかどうかが主な要因であると指摘されてきた。しかし、自然会話において観察されるア系列およびソ系列の非直示用法の中には、知識の共有という観点では説明が困難な事例も存在する。本稿は大規模自然会話コーパスの分析を通し、これらの指示詞の選択が話し手と聞き手間の知識の共有の有無ではなく、各指示詞が属する意味的範疇に基づくものであることを明らかにする。とくに、ア系列指示詞は事象様相を、ソ系列指示詞は言表様相を標示する標識として機能しており、この意味的範疇が非直示用法における指示詞の選択を左右する主な要因である点を明らかにする。さらに、仮定の内容を含む文においてア系列指示詞の使用が制限されること、また、談話で初めて言及される場合、非直示用法においてソ系列指示詞の使用が制限されることについても、それぞれの指示詞が事象様相および言表様相を標示する機能に起因していることを明らかにする。
