대통령 탄핵 사건을 통해 본 초등학생의 정치 현안 인식과 사회과 수업의 시사점

국문 초록

본 연구는 초등학교 4, 5, 6학년 학생들의 2025년 대통령 탄핵 사건에 대한 인식을 분석하고 그 결과를 토대로 정치 현안을 다루는 사회과수업에 주는 시사점을 도출하였다. 이를 위해 서울 소재 2개 초등학교 학생 24명을 연구 참여자로 선정하여 반구조화 집단 면담을 실시하고, 수집된 자료를 부호화하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 학생들은 대통령 탄핵 사건을 긍정과 부정이 뒤섞인 복합적 감정으로 이해하였다. 즉, 정의 실현과 새로운 시작에 대한 기대, 민주주의 위기와 사회 혼란에 대한 두려움, 탄핵당한 대통령에 대한 연민 등 다층적인 감정 반응이 공존하였다. 둘째, 학생들은 부모, 또래 친구, 교사와 같은 주변 인물, TV 뉴스와 같은 올드미디어, 유튜브와 같은 뉴미디어 등 다양한 경로를 통해 사건 관련 정보를 습득하였다. 특히 4학년은 TV 뉴스와 가족 대화를 중심으로 정보를 얻었으나, 고학년일수록 미디어 간 내용의 차이를 인식하고 SNS의 허위 조작가능성을 비판적으로 이해하는 태도가 나타났다. 셋째, 학생들은 대통령 탄핵 사건을 정치 제도와 민주주의에 관한 확장된 학습 기회로 경험하였으며, 선거의 중요성, 권력의 책임성, 시민 참여의 가치 등을 새롭게 인식하였다. 또한 학교 수업에서 정치 현안에 대해 배우길 기대하며, 이는 자신들이 마땅히 누려야 할 권리라는 인식을 드러냈다. 본 연구는 초등학생의 정치 현안 인식이 단순한 모방 수준에 머물지 않고, 다양한 경로를 거쳐 능동적이고 비판적으로 형성될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이에 따라 초등 사회과수업은 정치 현안에 대한 회피를 지양하고, 학생의 심리적 안정 지원, 미디어 리터러시 교육, 민주 시민의식 성장을 적극 도모해야 할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the perceptions of upper grade elementary school students regarding the 2025 presidential impeachment in Korea, and derived implications for social studies classes. 24 students from two elementary schools in Seoul participated in semi-structured group interviews, and the collected data were systematically analyzed. The analysis yielded three major findings. First, students interpreted the impeachment with complex and ambivalent emotions, encompassing expectations for justice and renewal, apprehension about democratic instability and social unrest, and sympathy for the impeached president. Second, they accessed information through multiple sources, including family members, peers, teachers, television news, and YouTube etc. While younger students primarily relied on family and television, older students demonstrated a growing capacity to compare media narratives critically and to question the credibility of social media content. Third, students perceived the impeachment as an educational opportunity to deepen their understanding of democracy and political institutions, highlighting the significance of elections, accountability, and civic participation. They also expressed strong expectations for schools to address current political issues as part of their rights as learners. The study underscores that elementary students’ political perceptions are not limited to passive imitation but can develop actively and critically through diverse channels. These findings suggest that elementary social studies classes should move to foster psychological support, media literacy, and the cultivation of democratic citizenship.
