예술을 활용한 초등 사회과수업 모색

국문 초록

본 연구는 초등 사회과교육에서 예술의 교육적 의미를 재검토하고 이를 토대로 초등 사회과수업에서 적용 가능한 활용 방안과 기준을 체계화하고 관련 수업 사례를 제안하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 기존 연구는 사회과수업에서 예술이 학습자의 흥미를 유발하고 창의적 사고를 촉진하는 매개로 기능할 수 있음을 밝혔으나 관련 논의는 주로 중등 사회과에 집중되어 초등 맥락에서의 적용 방안은 미흡하였다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 초등학생의 발달 특성과 초등교육의 구조적 특징을 고려하여 초등 사회과수업에서 예술을 효과적으로 활용할 수 있는 준거와 가능성을 탐색하였다. 도출된 활용 준거는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초등 사회과수업에서 예술은 학습자의 발달 수준과 생활 맥락과의 적합성을 고려해야 한다. 둘째, 예술 자료는 초등 사회과의 핵심 개념 및 주제와 직접적인 연계를 전제로 활용되어야 한다. 셋째, 초등교사의 전문성과 형평성 있는 평가를 예술 활용의 핵심 준거로 확립할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서 제시한 활용 준거는 초등 사회과의 교수, 평가 체제 전반에 적용 가능한 기준을 제공하며 예술을 초등 사회과수업의 핵심 자원으로 재인식하게 하는 근거가 될 수 있다. 이와 같은 논의를 토대로 본 연구는 민주 시민성 함양이라는 사회과교육의 목표에 기여할 수 있는 수업 사례를 제안하였다. 요컨대 본 연구는 초등 사회과교육에서 예술 활용의 필요성을 실천적 차원에서 구체화하였으며 수업 설계·평가 단계에서 적용 가능한 준거를 제공하였다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This study aims to re-examine the educational significance of art in elementary social studies education and, based on this, to systematize applicable strategies and criteria while presenting related instructional cases. While previous research has revealed that art in social studies can serve as a medium to stimulate learners’ interest and promote creative thinking, such discussions have been concentrated mainly on secondary education, with limited exploration of practical applications in elementary contexts. In response, this study investigated the criteria and possibilities for effectively integrating art into elementary social studies by considering the developmental characteristics of elementary students and the structural features of elementary education. The derived criteria are as follows: first, art in elementary social studies lessons should align with the developmental stages and contexts of learners; second, art resources should be utilized on the premise of direct linkage to the core concepts and themes of social studies; and third, teachers’ professionalism and fair evaluation need to be established as essential standards for the integration of art. These criteria provide benchmarks applicable across teaching and assessment systems in elementary social studies and may serve as a foundation for re-conceptualizing art as a core instructional resource. Building on these findings, this study presents lesson cases that contribute to the goal of social studies education—fostering democratic citizenship. In conclusion, the study holds significance in that it concretizes the necessity of art integration in elementary social studies at a practical level and provides criteria that can be applied to lesson design and assessment.
