‘경계 허물기’를 통해서 본 Shaun Tan의 『도착』

국문 초록

본 연구는 파편화된 서사의 양상을 보이지 않고 모더니즘적 서사세계의 특성인 질서 회복이라는 결말을 보여주는 Shaun Tan의 『도착』이 포스트모더니즘의 특성도 내포하고 있음을 보여주는 것을 목표로 한다. 포스트모더니즘의 경계 허물기가 이 작품의 다양한 층위에서 구현되고 있음을 보여주고자 하였다. 그림책과 만화를 아우르는 장르 정체성, 역사적 사실과 허구의 경계를 허무는 사료편찬적 메타픽션으로서의 측면, 기억 속의 공간과 현재의 공간의 경계가 허물어지며 ‘액자 속 이야기(mise en abime)’를 통해 하나로 엮어지는 서사 세계, 적극적 해석자로서의 ‘글 쓰는’ 독자의 위상, 독자층 사이의 경계를 허물어버리는 크로스오버 작품으로서의 수용 가능성 등에서 경계 허물기의 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다. 이 같은 다양한 층위에서의 경계 허물기는, 익숙한 공간인 고향을 떠난 이민자가 낯선 공간인 신세계에서 배척당하는 ‘주변인’이 아니라 그 곳의 다양한 거주민들과 똑같은 무게감을 가진 ‘존재’로 거듭나는 이야기를 보여주기 위한 글쓰기 전략이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this research is to study one of the postmodern elements in Shaun Tan’s "The Arrival". The postmodernism is characterized by decanonization, indeterminacy, fragmentation, irony, hybridization, participation, etc. This paper focuses on analyzing the picturebook in terms of decanonization: the canon’s authority is diminished, whereas the value of the periphery is increased. That results in the dissolution of the boundary between center and periphery. This disintegration of boundaries is observable in "The Arrival" in various aspects: genre, relation between fiction and non-fiction, temporal aspect of the narrative, relationship between author and reader, and dual readership. "The Arrival" is considered a picture book or a graphic novel according to its readership: in other words, it is between two genres in order to effectively interweave graphic narrative threads. This work is based on historical events: the narrative is interwoven with the western history of immigration at the beginning of the 20th century. This intertextuality that relates the historical events – which took place in New York, London and Australia – with the fiction makes the Australian picture book “historiographic metafiction”. When it comes to the narrative, the past stories of the major characters are inserted into the main present story: the past and the present are inseparably connected through the “mise en abîme” to the point of being fused into one. This temporal fusion is linked to the spatial and cultural connection between the homelands which the characters had to leave and the new land where they arrive to establish a new life. The dissolution of boundaries is perceivable in the relation between the author and the reader: the “death” of the former has given the latter the right to interpret the text without paying attention to the author’s intention. "The Arrival" is a non-verbal and visual semiotic space where the reader, now in a position of control, takes an active role in the construction of meaning. Furthermore, this graphic text based on the intertextuality embraces dual readership as implied readers. For intertextuality – a textual mechanism which shows a correlation between dual reception and the background knowledge of readers – intertwines the fiction and History: young readers are excluded from the latter, while adult readers have access to both of them. Because The Arrival transcends boundaries in the various aspects as stated above, it may be considered as an iconotext that bears postmodern features.
