사회적 이슈를 다룬 사실주의 그림책에 대한 유아의 문학적 반응

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 성폭력, 이혼, 따돌림과 같은 사회적 이슈를 담은 사실주의 그림책에 대해 유아가 어떻게 반응하고 해석하는지 언어적, 행동적 반응을 통해 분석하였다. 이를 위해 서울시 관악구에 위치한 K유치원 만 5세 남녀 유아 16명과 교사가 사실주의 그림책을 읽고 토론하는 장면을 비디오 녹화와, 오디오 녹음을 통해 기록하였다. 사실주의 그림책에 대한 유아의 반응은 Sipe(2008)의 연구에 쓰인 5가지 반응범주로 분류하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 사실주의 그림책에 대한 유아의 반응을 전체적으로 살펴보면, ‘개인적 반응’이 425회(54.6%), ‘분석적 반응’이 279회(35.9%), ‘상호텍스트적 반응’은 45회(5.8%), '연행적 반응’이 17회(2.2%), ‘동화된 반응’이 12회(1.5%)순으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 사회적 이슈를 담은 사실주의 그림책이 유아에게 전혀 낯설고 어려운 주제가 아니며 유아들은 민감한 사회적 이슈와 격리된 존재가 아님을 알 수 있다. 또한 유아들은 사실주의 그림책의 그림보다 글에 더 분석적으로 반응하였으며, 사회 문제에 대한 정보를 주로 뉴스, 드라마 등 TV, 대중매체에서 얻고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore how young children respond to and interpret the realistic picture books reflecting the current social issues such as child sexual abuse, parents' divorce and exclusion by peers. The subjects were sixteen 5 years old attending K kindergarten in a suburb of Seoul. The children were divided into three groups of 5-6 children only for the reading aloud session. Three picture books were read to each group by the classroom teacher one at a time during 9 reading sessions lasting 9 weeks. Every reading session was recorded by a video camera and an audio cassette recorder and were transcribed later. The children's responses to the realistic picture books were classified into five categories drawn from Sipe (2008)'s classification scheme : personal, analytical, intertextual, performative and transparent responses. The results showed that the frequency and ratio of each literary response were as follows : ‘personal response’ 425 times (54.6%), ‘analytical response’ 279 times (35.9%), ‘intertextual response’ 45 times (5.8%), ‘performative response’ 17 times (2.2%) and ‘transparent response’ 12 times (1.5%). The children's responses showed that it would not be new and strange for young children to encounter social issues represented in the picture books. However, young children usually get biased and inaccurate information regarding the social issues mostly through television programs such as TV news and drama. These findings imply that picture books could be the effective and educational media through which young children recognize and understand the social issues and, furthermore, find out the way to get help to solve the problem.
