국문 초록

본 연구는 1995년부터 2025년까지 출판된 할아버지 관련 그림책 중, 제목에 ‘할아버지’가 포함되고 0~8세 유아를 주요 독자로 한 174권을 선정하여 질적 내용 분석을 통해 출판 경향, 화자와 할아버지의 관계, 할아버지의 의미를 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 할아버지를 다룬 그림책은 2000년대 이후 꾸준히 증가하였으며, 한국, 일본, 미국, 영국, 프랑스 등 다양한 문화권에서 출판되었다. 화자와 할아버지의 관계는 ‘우리 할아버지’, ‘이웃 할아버지’, ‘전문직업인 할아버지’ 유형으로 구분되었고, 이 중 ‘우리 할아버지’가 가장 빈번하였다. 또한 할아버지는 삶과 기억을 잇는 다리, 세대를 넘어선 친구, 시야를 넓혀주는 멘토로 묘사되었으며, 세대 간 상호작용 속에서 할아버지도 변화하고 성장하는 모습을 새롭게 확인하였다. 본 연구는 그림책이 세대 간 소통을 돕는 중요한 매체로 기능할 수 있음을 시사하며, 이를 반영한 다양한 그림책과 프로그램 개발의 필요성을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed 174 picture books about grandfathers published between 1995 and 2025, selected based on titles containing the word “grandfather” and targeting children aged 0–8, excluding educational books, materials for older readers, and special cases such as Santa-themed stories. Using qualitative content analysis, the study examined publication trends, the relationship between narrators and grandfathers, and the meanings attributed to grandfathers. The findings show that grandfather-themed picture books have steadily increased since the 2000s, reflecting diverse cultures, including those of South Korea, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. The narrator-grandfather relationship was categorized into three types: “my grandfather,” “grandpa next door,” and “grandfather with expertise,” with “my grandfather” being the most common, highlighting emotional family bonds. Grandfathers were portrayed as bridges connecting life with memory, companions across generations, and mentors who broadened children's horizons. Notably, grandfathers were depicted not only as figures imparting wisdom but also as individuals who change and grow through intergenerational interaction. These results suggest that picture books serve as vital mediums for fostering intergenerational communication, highlighting the need for more works and programs that support generational integration.
