중·고등학생 논설문의 지프의 법칙 실현 양상

국문 초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 자연과 인간 사회의 다양한 현상을 설명하는 법칙 중 하나인 지프의 법칙(Zipf’s law)이 우리나라 중·고등학생의 논설문의 단어 사용에서도 실현되는지 확인하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 연구방법: 중학생 논설문 894편과 고등학생의 논설문 1,468편, 총 2,362편을 대상으로 글에 나타난 단어의 빈도를 확인하였다. 또한 단어 빈도의 분포가 지프 법칙 분포와 유사한지 그래프를 통해 시각적으로 확인하고, 이를 다시 정량적으로 검증하여 지프 법칙에 부합하는지 확인하였다. 연구결과: 전체 집단과 학교급별 집단의 단어 빈도는 모두 지프 법칙에 근사한 것으로 확인되었다. 상위 30위에 해당하는 단어가 전체 단어 빈도의 40%에 근사하는 비율을 차지하였으며, 3개 집단에서 상위 10위 안에 포함되는 단어가 거의 일치하는 것으로 나타났다. 회귀분석, Power law 적합도 확인, 로그 우도 비 검정에서 지프 법칙에 근사한 결과를 보였다. 결론: 우리나라 중·고등학생 논설문에 나타난 지프 법칙 실현 양상은 언어 사용에서 최소 노력의 원리에 따른 자연스러운 현상이자, 필자로서의 학생이 논제와 논증 구조에 부합하면서 효율적으로 글을 작성하기 위한 노력에서 나타나는 보편적 법칙이라 할 수 있다. 언어 발달 과정에 있는 학생의 글이 지프 법칙을 따르는 것은 쓰기 및 읽기 교육에서 학생이 다양하고 다변화된 단어를 사용하도록 지도하고, 학생 수준에 적합한 읽기 자료를 선정하는 데에 도움을 줄 수 있다. 나아가 지프 법칙은 인공지능이 생성한 글과 학생 글을 변별하기 위한 기준점으로 활용될 가능성을 내포한다.

영문 초록

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate whether Zipf's law-a principle explaining various phenomena in nature and human society-is also manifested in the word usage of argumentative essays written by middle and high school students. Methods: A total of 2,362 student essays were analyzed, comprising 894 essays from middle school students and 1,468 from high school students. The frequency of words used in these essays was examined. A visual analysis was conducted to determine whether the word frequency distribution aligns with Zipfian distribution, followed by quantitative validation to verify the conformity with Zipf's law. Results: The word frequency distributions of the entire corpus as well as of each school level approximated Zipf's law. The top 30 words accounted for approximately 40% of the total word occurrences, and the top 10 most frequent words were nearly identical across all three subgroups. Regression analysis, goodness-of-fit tests for power-law distribution, and log-likelihood ratio tests all indicated a strong approximation to Zipf's law. Conclusion: The realization of Zipf's law in student essays reflects a natural linguistic phenomenon governed by the principle of least effort. It also represents a universal pattern emerging from students' efforts to write efficiently while conforming to the topic and argumentative structure. The adherence to Zipf's law in students' writing, despite their ongoing language development, suggests instructional implications for writing and reading education. Teachers may guide students to use a more diverse vocabulary and select reading materials that match students' developmental levels. Furthermore, Zipf's law may serve as a potential benchmark for distinguishing between student-authored texts and those generated by artificial intelligence.
