Implementing English Drama in a Korean University English Conversation Class-A Case Study

국문 초록

영어 드라마가 학습자의 영어 능력의 향상뿐만 아니라 정의적인 부분에 있어서도 긍정적인 영향을 끼친다는 연구 결과는 많다. 하지만, 대부분의 연구 대상은 어린이나 청소년 대상이고 성인을 대상으로 한 연구는 그에 비해 상당히 부족한 실정이다. 그러나 성인과 미성년자 간에는 인지적, 지적, 그리고 정의적 면에 있어서 상당한 차이가 존재하기에 연구결과를 성인에게도 일반화시키고자한다면 성인을 대상으로 한 연구가 더 많이 필요한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 연구 공백을 채우고자 대학 교양 영어회화 수업 시간에 영어 드라마 활동을 5주간 실행하여 그 효과를 검증해보았다. 구체적으로, 학생들에게 실시한 설문조사와 인터뷰를 바탕으로 영어 드라마가 학생들의 의사소통의지에 끼치는 영향과 학생들의 영어 드라마활동에 대한 반응을 조사하였다. 그 결과, 영어 드라마가 학습자의 영어 능력, 특히, 말하기 능력의 향상을 가져왔다는 점과 학습자의 정의적인 면에 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤다는 점에서 선행 연구의 결과와 일치점을 보였으나, 영어 드라마 활동이 의사소통의지를 유의미하게 향상시키지는 않았다. 또한. 서구에서 직수입된 학생중심 활동을 한국과 같이 유교적 영향에서 완전히 벗어나지 못하고 교사 중심의 교실환경에 길들여진 학생들에게 적용할 때에는 교사의 보다 적극적인 개입과 조력이 필요함을 제안한다.

영문 초록

A great number of studies attest that an English drama activity has not only linguistic benefits but also affective benefits. However, in most studies, study subjects are either children or adolescents. More studies are needed to generalize the findings on the adult population. In order to address this lack, the present study was conducted in a university English conversation class. The data on WTC (Willingness To Communicate) and students’reaction to English drama experience was gathered through the surveys and interviews. The result indicated no significant increase in the students’ WTC, but the findings of the current study concur with the previous research on the benefits of English drama in both linguistic and affective domains. Moreover, the current study asserts that cultural component must be taken into account when implementing student-centered activities directly imported from the West. Pedagogical suggestions are made on how teachers can help students under Confucian influence when implementing English drama in English classrooms.
