자유전공학부 입학생의 전공 선택 및 적응 경험 분석 : 소속 학과를 결정한 A 대학 고학년의 경험을 중심으로

국문 초록

Purpose: This study investigates how students in the Division of Undeclared Majors at University A explore academic majors and adapt to institutional, academic, and social contexts after declaring a major. The aim is to inform the development of more effective, student-centered flexible major selection systems in higher education. Method: Twelve upper-year students who entered the university without a declared major and later selected one were interviewed using a semi-structured format. Data were analyzed through the constant comparative method, involving iterative coding to identify recurring themes. Expert review and multiple refinements were conducted to ensure the validity of the findings. Results: The analysis revealed four key challenges. First, although students anticipated freedom in exploring academic fields, they experienced confusion due to limited course availability and insufficient academic guidance. Second, constrained access to academic information and early restrictions on major choices resulted in inefficient course planning, often requiring completion of general education courses unrelated to students’ interests. Third, students struggled with delayed completion of foundational coursework or enrollment in advanced courses without proper prerequisites, largely due to limited advising and faculty support before and after major declaration. Fourth, after entering their chosen departments, students experienced emotional disengagement and a weak sense of belonging, describing exclusion from peer communities and academic networks. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of strengthening academic advising systems, improving access to major-related information, and expanding structured opportunities for exploration. Drawing on students’ lived experiences, it provides policy-relevant insights for enhancing institutional support mechanisms within undeclared major programs.

영문 초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 자유전공학부에 입학한 학생들이 전공을 탐색하고 진입한 이후 경험하는 학사제도, 학업 적응, 사회적 관계 형성 과정을 심층적으로 분석함으로써, 전공자율선택제 및 자유전공학부의 효과적 인 운영과 제도 개선을 위한 학술적 시사점을 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구방법: A 대학 자유전공학부에 입학하여 전공을 결정한 고학년 학생 12명을 대상으로 반구조화된 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 반복적 비교분석법을 활용한 질적 내용 분석을 통해 핵심적인 하위범주 와 상위범주를 도출하였으며, 연구결과의 신뢰성과 타당성 확보를 위해 전문가 자문 및 반복적인 수정과 보완 과정을 거쳤다. 연구결과: 분석 결과, 첫째, 학생들은 전공 탐색의 자율성을 기대했으나, 제한된 수강 기회와 정보 부족으 로 혼란을 경험했다. 둘째, 학사 정보 제공의 미흡, 1학년 시기 전공 선택의 제한성, 그리고 전공과 무관한 공통 교양과목 이수의 비효율성 등이 제기되었다. 셋째, 전공 진입 전후 체계적인 교수 상담과 학업 지도의 부재로 학습 적응에 어려움을 겪었다. 넷째, 전공 진입 후 유대감 형성 실패로 심리적 위축과 소외감을 경 험하였으며, 정보 공유 및 공동체 활동에서 배제되어 소속감 결여를 호소하였다. 논의 및 결론: 자유전공학부의 성공적인 운영을 위해서는 체계적인 정보 제공 시스템 구축과 폭넓은 전공 탐색 기회 확대를 위한 제도 개선이 논의되었다. 본 연구는 자유전공학부 학생들의 실제 학업 경험을 바탕 으로 전공자율선택제의 도입 및 운영에 있어 실질적인 정책적 시사점을 제공한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
