국문 초록

Solo Leveling is more than just a webtoon; it serves as a case study illustrating how Hallyu (Korean Wave) content can establish emotional connections with East Asian readers. This paper analyzes the reception of Solo Leveling in China across four main dimensions: fandom culture, the reception of the protagonist’s character, narrative structure, and cultural translation. First, the work fostered emotional sharing and the formation of a communal identity within a platform-based fandom culture. Practices such as commenting, repeated re-reading, and collective mourning for the artist extended beyond mere appreciation into emotional engagement. Second, the reception of the protagonist created a space for readers to project their ideal selves and achieve emotional identification. The protagonist’s visual appeal, ethical values, and growth narrative served as key factors that deepened emotional immersion. Third, while faithfully following the structure of the typical ‘Shuangwen’ (爽文) genre, the work was reinterpreted with Korean-style direction and emotional sensibility, thereby satisfying both the genre expectations and emotional needs of Chinese readers. The familiar system-based growth, cathartic plot development, and rapid storytelling played critical roles in enhancing genre affinity. This blend of familiarity and otherness contributed significantly to the work’s successful hybrid reception. Solo Leveling intricately weaves together otherness and familiarity, emotion and system, fantasy and reality. The patterns of reception observed within the Chinese fandom reveal that the work holds cultural significance that extends beyond mere popularity. Through this case, we can reaffirm how emotional communities are formed in the digital era and how emotions operate at the core of content reception. In sum, Solo Leveling functions not merely as something to ‘watch’ but as something to ‘feel and remember together’, achieving a true ‘leveling up’ within the emotional field of fandom.
