국문 초록

Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Chinese character structure studies and cognitive linguistics, this paper examines the Xiao Zhuan forms of characters containing the structural element “田” in Shuowen Jiezi, focusing on its cognitive semantic expansions. Through an analysis informed by conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy, the study reveals that “田” extends its meanings to a wide range of domains, from agriculture and land-measurement units to geographical and administrative divisions, ceremonial contexts, and more abstract concepts. The findings highlight the crucial role of metonymic development in this process. Moreover, “田” emerges as a core symbol in ancient Chinese agrarian society, intrinsically connected not only to farmland but also to governance, ritual, and cultural institutions—reflecting the broader thought system and social order of the time. By applying a cognitive approach to the study of Chinese character components, this research elucidates the underlying meaning structures and cultural motivations embedded in ancient character forms. Future investigations will expand to other structural elements, contributing foundational data that can enhance both Chinese character and Chinese vocabulary education.
