국문 초록

This paper examines the conceptualization of the olfactory term ‘香’ from a cognitive linguistic perspective, focusing on Ming(明) and Qing(淸) period Chinese sensory vocabulary. Utilizing entries from the Hanyu Da Cidian(漢語大詞典) and referencing Shuowen Jiezi(說文解字) and Hanyu Yuanliu Zidian(漢語原流字典), the study explores semantic expansions through metaphor, metonymy, metaphtonymy, subjectification, and conceptual blending theory. Initially bearing a prototypical olfactory meaning, ‘香’ gradually expanded to gustatory, emotional, and social domains, primarily via metonymic mechanisms. The subjectification process notably incorporated personal experiences and evaluations, significantly influencing the semantic development of ‘香’. By highlighting diverse conceptualization aspects of ‘香’, this research enhances the understanding of cognitive features inherent in sensory language.
