국문 초록

This paper examines four of the most commonly used verbs expressing the meaning of holding in Modern, Early Modern, Middle, and Old Chinese, i.e. “拿 (ná), 把 (bǎ), 持 (chí), 执 (zhí)”, to demonstrate the significant role of social meanings within the semantic content of lexical words. This is reflected in two aspects: first, social meanings constitute a substantial proportion of examples; second, the senses of social meanings exhibit greater diversity compared to those of physical meanings. The study of the semantics of content words should be divided into four domains: physical domain, social domain, cognitive domain, and speech-act domain. Our research reveals that the generalization and definition of senses presents considerable challenges for dictionary compilation. For a high-frequency word, it requires investigating hundreds or even thousands of instances as the basis for semantic generalization and definition. On the other hand, it is necessary to examine the usage of synonymous or near-synonymous words to ensure systematicity in dictionary compilation.
