국문 초록

This paper examines the historical development and linguistic significance of reduplicative words (重言詞) in the 《Book of Songs(Shijing)》, introducing refined categories: simple reduplicatives (e.g., 依依, ‘fluttering’, unrelated to original syllable meaning) and compound reduplicatives (e.g., 悠悠, ‘very distant’, intensifying the original meaning). Analyzing 354 examples, the study covers their semantic diversity—polysemy, homophony, synonymy, antonymy, and etymological relationships—and highlights semantic clusters and opposites (e.g., 冥冥 ‘dark’ vs 央央 ‘bright’). Grammatically, 90% function descriptively as adjectives or stative verbs, with others serving as onomatopoeia, verbs, nouns, or interjections. These words significantly enhance poetic imagery, emotional tone, and rhythmic qualities. Historically originating in spoken vernacular, reduplicative words became literary standards, influencing vocabulary development from monosyllabic to polysyllabic structures. Many Shijing reduplicatives survive in modern Chinese idioms, illustrating lasting literary influence.
