‘동양 사람들은 점(占) 보기를 좋아한다’는 사회심리학적 결론에 대한 검토

국문 초록

리처드 니스벳은『생각의 지도』에서, ‘동양 사람들은 왜 점 보는 것을 좋아할까?’라는 연구 물음에 대해 그 원인을 ‘바넘 효과에 약하기 때문’이라고 했다. 본 논문의 목적은 이 결론에 대해 동아시아 철학사상의 관점에서 문제점을 논하는 것이다. 동양인들이 점 보기를 좋아하는 이유를 ‘논리적 일관성 부족으로 인해 속기 쉬운 성격적 경향’으로 제시한 것은 사회과학적 실험의 인과적 결론으로는 인정할 수 있지만, 다음과 같은 문제점이 있다. 첫째, 서양인이 바라보는 동양의 ‘점’은 주술적 미신이라는 인식이 강하므로, ‘동양 사람들은 점 보기를 좋아한다’는 진술을 논증된 결과로 인정할 경우, 서양인들에게 동양인은 ‘비논리적이며 미신을 좋아하는 사람’으로 인식될 가능성을 더욱 높이게 된다. 둘째, ‘동양인들은 교묘하게 속이는 점술사의 말을 간파할 능력이 부족해 점술을 좋아하는 것’이라고 인정하게 된다. 셋째, 책에서 ‘동양 사람들은 왜 점 보는 것을 좋아할까?’를 소제목으로 제시해, ‘동양인들은 점 보기를 좋아한다’는 언명이 기정 사실이라는 인상을 독자들에게 주고 있다. 이에 대한 검토 의견은 첫째, 동아시아에서 ‘점’에 대한 인식은 서양과 다르며, 『주역』과 음양오행론을 바탕으로 하는 동아시아의 주요 점술의 출발점은 ‘주술적 믿음’이 아니라, 인간 스스로의 힘과 지혜로 삶의 우환과 문제를 해결하기 위한 경험주의적 방법론이라는 것이다. 둘째, “논리적 일관성이 부족해 교묘하게 숨겨진 모순을 간파하지 못해 점술사의 말을 쉽게 믿는 동양인”이라는 분석에서는, ‘모순’과 관련된 동아시아인의 ‘종합적 사유 특성’을 반영해 이해할 필요가 있다는 것이다.

영문 초록

In The Geography of Thought, Richard Nisbet answers the research question, “Why do Asians like fortune-telling?” by saying that it is because they lack the Barnum effect. While we can accept the causal conclusion of a social science experiment that Asians like fortune-telling because of a lack of logical consistency and a tendency to be gullible, there are several problems. The purpose of this study is to discuss this problem from the perspective of East Asian thought. First, Westerners have a strong perception of Eastern “fortune-telling” as witchcraft and superstition, so accepting the statement “Asians like fortune-telling” as a conclusion increases the likelihood that Asians will be perceived as “illogical and superstitious” by Westerners. Second, to admit that “Orientals like fortune tellers because they lack the ability to spot a cheating fortune teller” is to admit that “Orientals like fortune tellers.” Third, the subtitle of the book, “Why do Orientals like fortune tellers?” gives the reader the impression that it is an established fact that Orientals like fortune tellers. In response, we first points out that the perception of “divination” in East Asia is different from that in the West, and that the main starting point of East Asian divination, based on the theories of the the Book Of Changes(周易) and the YinYangwuxing(陰陽五行) theory, is not a “shamanistic belief” but a empiricist methodology for solving life's problems and challenges with human power and wisdom. Second, in the analysis that "Asians lack logical consistency and do not recognize hidden contradictions, so they easily believe what fortune tellers say", we argue that it is necessary to reflect the "comprehensive thinking characteristics" of East Asians in relation to "contradictions".
