국문 초록

이 논문은 셀라스(Sellars)의 경험론 비판이 리드식(Reidian)의 경험론에도 적용되는지를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 만약 적용되지 않는다면, 적어도 셀라스가 “소여의 신화(myth of the given)”를 통해 제기한 비판은 모든 고전적 경험론자가 공유하는 가정에 대한 비판으로 볼 수 없으므로 고전적 경험론 일반의 문제점이라고 간주하는 것은 부적절할 것이다. 그러한 경우 셀라스의 비판을 피할 수 있는 경험론의 형태도 가능해지고, 셀라스 비판의 포괄성 또한 약화될 수 있다. 이 논문은 두 철학자의 입장을 비교하기 위해서 현대 인식론, 특히 신념의 정당화 이론을 공통의 장으로 삼아 비교하고자 한다. 내재론적 기초주의자들은 기본 신념을 인식주체의 의식으로부터의 어떤 인지적 접근을 통해 정당화하려고 시도하기 때문에 셀라스의 비판에서 자유로울 수 없다. 그러나 리드는 선천적 능력에 의해 산출된 신념은 어떠한 추론 없이도 그 자체로 정당화되며, 신념 형성 메커니즘을 인식 주체가 전혀 인지하지 못하더라도 해당 신념은 정당화된다고 본다. 즉, 리드는 지식이 인식적 접근 없이 오직 인과적 관계만으로 산출될 수 있다고 보는 외재론적 입장을 채택하였기 때문에 고전적 경험론자라 할지라도 셀라스의 비판에서 자유로울 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether Sellars’ critique of empiricism also applies to Reid’s form of empiricism. If it does not apply, then at the very least, Sellars’ criticism through the “myth of the given” cannot be seen as a critique of an assumption shared by all empiricists, and thus it would be inappropriate to regard it as a problem with empiricism in general. If this is the case, then a version of empiricism immune to Sellars’ critique would be possible, and the comprehensiveness of Sellars’ critique would be weakened. This paper seeks to compare the positions of the two philosophers by using contemporary epistemology—specifically, theories of justification of belief—as a common ground connecting them. While internalist foundationalists cannot escape Sellars’ critique, since they attempt to justify basic beliefs through some form of cognitive access from the epistemic subject’s consciousness, Reid, on the other hand, maintains that beliefs produced by innate faculties are justified in themselves without any inference and remain justified even if the subject is entirely unaware of the belief-forming mechanism. Because he adopts an externalist position　that knowledge can be produced solely on the basis of a causal relationship without any epistemic access, Reid can be considered immune to Sellars’ critique.
