국문 초록

본고는 『삼국유사』 편찬의 체재 구성과 의미를 거시적으로 조망해볼 수 있는 하나의 시각을 마련해보고자 한다. 일연은 한국과 중국의 건국시조들이 모두 “신이한데서 나왔다(皆發乎神異)”라고 하고 첫편을 ‘紀異“라고 이름지었다. 오늘날의 표현으로 일상에서 벗어난 초월적인 힘과 작용을 보여주면서 일상이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시해주는 빛의 구실을 하는 것을 성스럽다는 말로 제시하면서, 이 용어가 삼국유사를 일관되게 이해하는 지침이 된다고 보았다. <기이>편의 설화 기록물들은 사실은 대다수가 역사와 연관이 있는 설화들이다. <기이>편은 역사+설화의 면모를 보인다. 사실과 거짓의 차원을 동시에 넘어서고자 하는 것이다. 그것이 역사적 현상을 합리주의적으로만 인식하는 세계관에 대한 삼국유사의 대응책이라고 할 수 있다. 이어지는 네 편목은 이렇게 정리할 수 있다. ‘<흥법>편 : 성스러운 종교의 도입/ <탑상>편 : 성스러운 대상물들/ <의해>편, <신주>편 : 성스러운 고승들. 보통사람들이 볼 때 이들은 모두 성스러운 대상들이다. <흥법>편의 불교가 바로 성스러운 종교이고, <탑상>편의 탑과 불상들은 불교를 드러내는 성스러운 대상물들이고다. <의해>편의 고승들 스스로는 성스러운 부처를 찾는 사람들이지만, 佛法僧 三寶에의 歸依라는 말이 보여주듯이 신앙의 성스러운 대상이 된다. <감통>, <피은>, <효선>은 이렇게 정리된다. <감통>편 : 성스러움을 찾는 보통 사람들/ <피은>편 : 성스러움 찾기의 전제, 세속과의 절연/ <효선>편 : 성스러움과 세속의 관계 맺기. 이 세편은 성스러움을 추구하고 탐색하는 보통 사람들의 이야기이며 깨달음과 실천의 문제를 지속적으로 다루고 있다. 초월적인 성스러운 세계를 깨닫는 일과 그 깨달음을 실천으로 보여주는 것이 또한 성스러움의 歷程이다. 지금 여기의 삶을 넘어서는 초월성과 보편성을 깨달으면서 현실성과 특수성에 맞추어 실천하는 것이 ��삼국유사��의 불교 기사가 제시하고자 하는 이상이다. 신이함이란 몇 가지의 기적 또는 신비가 아니라 역사를 움직이는 이유가 있다는 것이다. 그저 흘러가는 것이 아니라 역사 주체의 선택과 역사 이면의 초월적인 힘의 관계라는 것이다. 기이란 이런 신이가 표면상으로 드러나는 사례이다. 이런 사유는 一然이 처한 현실 상황과 整合性이 있다. 일연은 승려이면서 원의 식민지가 되어버린 고려인이었다. 승려로서는 시간을 초월하는 진리를 찾아야 했고, 고려인으로서는 식민지 상태로부터 벗어나고, 고려는 융성해야 했다. 삼국의 역사 전개에 이면의 힘이 작용했듯이 일연 당대에도 현상 이면의 힘을 필요로 했다. 여기서 두 가지 상반된 것이 융합된다. 초월적이고 영원한 속성을 가진 성스러움을 추구하는 것이 지금 여기서의 삶의 문제를 해결하는 길이 된다. 그 성스러움의 힘이 우리를 구원한다.

영문 초록

This article aims to provide a broad perspective on the structure, composition, and significance of the compilation of the "Samguk Yusa." Yi Yeon (Iryeon) named the first section "Giy" (紀異), emphasizing that both Korea’s and China's founding mythological ancestors are described as originating from "something divine and extraordinary" (皆發乎神異). In contemporary terms, this section reveals transcendental powers and actions beyond everyday experience, serving as a guiding light for the direction of ordinary life. The term "sacred" (성스러움) is presented as a concept that consistently underpins the understanding of the "Giy" section, indicating that these stories portray the divine as a source of inspiration and guidance. The records of legends in the "Giy" section mostly relate to historical events, indicating a blend of history and myth. These stories are not solely about factual history but also aim to transcend the simple dichotomy of truth and falsehood. For example, in the case of Gaozun (Gojoseon), the visible historical outcomes are believed to be the results of unseen divine forces, such as Hwanin, Ungnyeo, and Dangun. These divine entities, representing transcendental powers, are thought to manifest in historical reality—a worldview that affirms the divine acting through history. This perspective can be seen as a response to a rationalistic worldview that perceives historical phenomena purely as cause-and-effect phenomena. The subsequent four sections can be summarized as follows: Hungbeop (흥법) section - Introduction of sacred religion (Buddhism); Tapsang (탑상) section - Sacred objects like pagodas and statues; Eui (이, 의혀) and Sinju (신주) sections - Sacred monks and venerable masters. To ordinary people, all of these are considered sacred objects: Buddhism as a sacred religion in the case of "Hungbeop," pagodas and statues as sacred symbols of Buddhism in "Tapsang," and monks as seekers of sacred Buddha nature. The phrase "taking refuge in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha)" expresses that these monks serve as vessels of the sacred through their faith. The sections "< Gamtong >," "< Pi-eun >," and "< Hyoseon >" are summarized as follows: Gamtong (감통) section - People seeking sacredness; Pi-eun (피은) section - Preconditions for seeking sacredness, renunciation of worldly attachments; Hyoseon (효선) (filial piety and virtue) section - The relationship between sacredness and the mundane world. These stories depict individuals pursuing and exploring sacredness, highlighting ongoing questions regarding enlightenment and practical action. Recognizing transcendent divine worlds and enacting the enlightenment through practice form the spiritual course that "Samguk Yusa" exemplifies. The ultimate goal is to transcend the present life with a realization of transcendence and universality, aligning this understanding with their immediate reality and unique circumstances. The idea of "divinity" (신이함) involves more than just miraculous or mysterious events; it signifies that there are reasons behind the movement of history—these are not mere happenstances but relationships between human agency and transcendental forces underlying history. Miracles or extraordinary phenomena are manifestations of this divine agency. This way of thinking aligns with the real-world situation faced by Yi Yeon himself. As a monk and a Koryeo individual under the influence of Mongolian rule, he sought eternal truth beyond time, while also needing his nation to flourish and break free from colonial oppression. Just as unseen forces influenced the course of the Three Kingdoms' history, such forces were also at work in his own era. Here, two contrasting elements—transcendental, eternal sacredness and the immediacy of present life—are fused. Pursuing this sense of sacredness, with its divine power, becomes the path to solving life’s immediate problems. That divine power of sacredness offers salvation.
