고정순 작가의 일명, ‘다크 그림책’에 나타난 레비나스(Levinas)의 타자(the other)이해

국문 초록

본 연구는 일명, 다크 그림책 작가로 불리는 고정순 그림책에 나타난 레비나스(Levinas)의 ‘타자(the other)’ 이해는 어떠한지 살펴보고, Levinas의 타자이해에 근거한 고정순 작가의 다크 그림책이 갖는 문학적 함의는 무엇인지 탐구해 보고자 하였다. 특히, 고정순 작가의 다크 그림책의 특성상 시각적 은유와 상징이 많다는 점에서 연구자는 퍼스(Peirce)의 기호학을 활용해 그림책 5권에 나타난 ‘타자양상’, ‘타자의식’, ‘타자의미’에 대해 살펴보았는데. 고정순 그림책 속에 나타난 레비나스(Levinas)의 ‘타자(the other)’에 대해 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 고정순그림책에 나타난 ‘타자양상’은 끝없이 이어진 고통의 선(line)으로 연결된 존재로 확인되었고, 둘째, 타자와 관련된 작가의 의식은 타자를 눈, 코, 입이 없는 불분명한 얼굴의 형상을 가진 존재로 형상화함으로써 타자의 고통에 대한 독자의 윤리적 호소와 응답을 요청하고 있었고, 셋째, 그림책에 나타난 ‘타자 의미’는 ‘나’에게 윤리적 책임을 지우며 타자를 향해서 나아갈 수 있도록 이끄는 통로 역할을 갖는 것으로 이해할 수 있었다. 이상의 내용을 통해서 살펴본 고정순 작가의 다크 그림책은 타자의 고통에 대한 독자의 응답을 바라며 타자와의 소통과 연대를 이끄는 창구로서의 문학적 기능을 수행하고 있었다. 동시에 다크 그림책은 말할 수 없는 것들을 글과 그림으로 보여주었다는 점에서 문학의 쓸모에 주목한 그림책으로의 함의를 갖는 것으로 확인되었다. 이에 본 연구에서 다크 그림책은 유아가 가진 내면의 문제들을 극복하게 해 줄 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 어린이를 위한 그림책 장르의 인식 확장에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study examined the understanding of Levinas's concept of 'the other' as portrayed in the picture books of Go Jeong-sun, known as a "Dark Picture Book" author, and explored the literary implications based on Go Jeong-sun's understanding of 'the other' according to Levinas. Specifically, considering the visual metaphors and symbols prevalent in Go Jeong-sun's Dark Picture Books, this study used Peirce's semiotics to investigate the aspects of 'otherness', ‘consciousness of the other,’ and 'meaning of the other' in five picture books. The analysis of Levinas's 'the other' as depicted in Go Jeong-sun's picture books resulted in the following findings. First, the aspect of 'otherness' in Go Jeong-sun's picture books is identified as an existence connected by an endless line of suffering. Second, the author's consciousness related to the 'other' is depicted by shaping the other as an indistinct face without eyes, nose, and mouth, appealing to the reader's ethical response and engagement with the other's suffering. Third, the 'meaning of the other' in the picture books is understood as a pathway that imposes ethical responsibility on the 'self' and guides one towards the other. Through the examination of the above content, it was observed that Go Jeong-sun's Dark Picture Books serve as a literary function that encourages the reader's response to the other's suffering and facilitates communication and solidarity with the other. Furthermore, these picture books have implications in that they depict the ineffable through words and illustrations, drawing attention to the utility of literature. As a result, Dark Picture Books are expected not only to help children overcome their internal issues but also to contribute to expanding the recognition of the picture book genre for children.
