1980년대 중산층 가정 문화 담론의 생산과 전시 - 여성 잡지 『샘이깊은물』을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 ‘가정 잡지’를 표방한 여성 잡지 『샘이깊은물』에 수록된 잡지 내부 텍스트들을 대상으로 『샘이깊은물』에 드러난 ‘가정’과 ‘여성’ 담론을 논구하고자 하였다. 주부 계층의 구매력 상승과 함께 소비대중문화가 극에 달했던 1980년대, 『샘이깊은물』 편집진은 다수의 여성 독자들이 가정이라는 단위 내외부에 포진해있음을 의식하고 그들을 중심으로 잡지를 기획하였다. 『샘이깊은물』의 내부 텍스트들을 통해 전시된 ‘가정’ 내부의 생활상은 상위계층 일부까지를 아우르는 보다 넓은 의미의 중산층에 해당하는 것들이었다. 또한 잡지 주체들은 현대적 요소와 전통적 요소를 아우르되 전통적 요소에 주목한 심미적 기준을 적용하여 이들을 선별･수록하였다. 특정 계층의 생활상을 다룬 기사에서도 이러한 심미적 기준은 유지되었으며 이들은 모두 같은 공간에 배치되었다. 이에 본고에서는 의식주나 생활상을 다룬 주요 고정 코너를 통해 전시된 『샘이깊은물』 편집진의 기획의도와 ‘편집자에게’ 코너를 통한 잡지 수록 기사들에 대한 독자들의 수용 태도까지를 종합하여 논구하였다. 특히 1980년대 후반으로 이행해갈수록 더욱 분명해진 정치적･윤리적 이슈를 다루는 논조와 가정 내외부의 민주화를 역설하는 기사 등을 아울러, 궁극적으로 잡지 편집진들이 특정한 형상으로서 기입하고자 했던 당대 중산층 가정의 상이 어떤 것인지 그리고 그와 중첩되어 배치된 여성 담론은 어떤 것이었는지를 규명하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the discourses on women and home as articulated in the internal texts of “Saemikipunmul”, a women’s periodical that explicitly positioned itself as a home magazine. In the context of the 1980s—when consumer mass culture reached its height and the purchasing power of housewives significantly increased—the editorial team of “Saemikipunmul” formulated its strategies with the recognition that many of its female readers were situated both within and beyond the domestic sphere. The depictions of domestic life presented in “Saemikipunmul” reflected an expanded conception of the middle class, encompassing even certain segments of the upper class. The editorial staff selectively incorporated materials that combined modern and traditional elements, applying aesthetic criteria that explicitly privileged the latter. Even in articles portraying the lives of specific social groups, these aesthetic criteria were consistently upheld and presented within the same printed space. Accordingly, this study brings together an analysis of “Saemikipunmul”’s editorial intentions—evident in its regular sections on food, clothing, housing, and everyday life—and an examination of reader responses articulated in the “To the Editor” section. Particular attention is given to the magazine’s increasing engagement with political and ethical issues in the late 1980s, including articles that explicitly advocated the democratization of both public and domestic spheres. Ultimately, the study seeks to clarify the specific image of the contemporary middle-class household that the editorial staff attempted to inscribe, as well as the ways in which this was intertwined with the discourse on women.
