동원된 군인/군속, 귀환할 수 없는 전범 - 아시아-태평양전쟁기 식민지 조선인 청년의 전쟁 책임과 월경의 (불)가능성

국문 초록

이 글에서는 패전/해방 이후 (미)귀환자들 중 아시아-태평양전쟁에 동원된 식민지 조선인 청년들의 월경 과정에 주목하였다. 그리하여 제국 일본의 전쟁에 동원된 식민지 조선인 청년의 전범화, 그리고 그에 따른 (미)귀환이 갖는 의미를 살펴보았다. 식민지 조선인 전범의 자기 서사는 대문자 역사 아래 망각된 조선인 포로감시원의 존재를 복원하는 기록･증언으로서 의미를 갖는다. 이들 자기 서사는 일본의 전쟁 책임 전가와 연합군의 식민지 조선인 군속에 대한 몰이해, 해방 조선의 방임 등이 뒤얽혀 조선인 포로감시원들이 국민국가의 경계 밖으로 내몰렸음을 확인케 한다. 하지만 전쟁 동원과 패전, 전범과 석방의 기억은 귀환을 달성한 자의 위치에서 말해질 수 있는 것이었다. 한편, 미귀환자의 소거된 목소리는 이병주와 선우휘의 문학작품을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 이들의 문학은 냉전-분단 체제가 귀환할 수 없는 자들을 배제하거나 은폐하는 것을 통해 구축되고 운용되고 있다는 점을 보여준다. 뿐만 아니라 거기에 민족 수난사와 결부된 대문자 역사를 추동하고 있는 내셔널리즘이 강력하게 작동하고 있다는 점을 드러낸다. 그리하여 비가시화되었던 조선인 포로감시병의 서사적 귀환은 대문자 역사로부터 배제된 존재들을 환기시키면서 대문자 역사 그 자체에 의문을 제기한다. 이 글에서 살펴본 조선인 전범의 기록과 증언, 포로감시병의 서사적 귀환을 통해 집단화된 망각을 넘어 그와 같은 남한사회의 병리적 증상을 비판적으로 직시할 수 있다. 나아가 해방 이후 남한사회에서 버려지고 찢겨진 존재들을 봉인하고 은폐하여 비가시화하고자 했던 욕망을 해체하는 길에 설 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

In this article, I focused on the process of crossing the border of colonial Korean youths who were mobilized in the Asia-Pacific War among the (non)returnees after the defeat/liberation. In doing so, I examined the criminalization of colonial Korean youths who were mobilized in the war of Imperial Japan, and the meaning of their (non)return. The self-narratives of colonial Korean war criminals are significant as records and testimonies that restore the existence of Korean prisoner-of-war guards who were forgotten under capitalized history. These self-narratives confirm that the Korean prisoner-of-war guards were driven out of the boundaries of the nation-state due to the intertwining of Japan’s shifting of responsibility for the war, the Allied Forces’ lack of understanding of colonial Korean military personnel, and the neglect of liberated Korea. However, the memories of war mobilization, defeat, war criminals, and release could be told from the perspective of those who achieved return. Meanwhile, the voices of the missing can be confirmed through the literary works of Lee, Byeong-ju and Seon, Woo-hui. Their literature shows that the Cold War-division system is constructed and operated by excluding or concealing those who cannot return. In addition, it reveals that nationalism, which is driving the capital-letter history linked to the history of national suffering, is strongly at work. Thus, the narrative return of the invisible Korean prisoner guards raises questions about capital-letter history itself while recalling the beings excluded from capital-letter history. Through the records and testimonies of Korean war criminals and the narrative return of prisoner guards examined in this article, we will be able to critically face the pathological symptoms of South Korean society beyond collective forgetting. Through this, we will be able to stand on the path to dismantling the desire to seal, conceal, and make invisible the abandoned and torn beings in South Korean society after liberation.
