공초 오상순 집필 작문교과서 『중등작문』(1952)에 대한 기초적 연구

국문 초록

이 논문은 시인 공초 오상순(空超 吳相淳)이 해방 후 집필한 검인정 작문 교과서 『중등작문』(백영사, 1952)을 보다 정확하고 상세하게 해제하고자 하였다. 이 책은 지금까지 국어교재사 연구에서 목차 및 머리말 정도만 검토되었을 뿐 본격적으로 조명받지는 못했던 탓에, 기초적인 서지정보 확인 작업과, 수록 내용 및 그 맥락에 대한 전반적인 설명 작업이 필요한 상태로 남아 있었다. 현전하는 여러 판본을 대조한 결과 『중등작문』은 기존에 알려진 1947년이 아니라 1952년에 초판 발행된 것으로 추론되었다. 한편 『중등작문』에는 당시 일민주의를 제창한 철학자이자 초대 문교부 장관이었던 안호상과, 안호상의 문교 정책에 적극적으로 호응했던 조연현, 김동리, 모윤숙, 유치진 등 우익 문인들의 글이 예문으로 다수 수록되었다. 이는 이 책이 ‘글쓰기’라는 기능을 교육하는 이면에 예문 내용을 통해 우익 이데올로기를 간접적으로 전달하였음을 보여준다. 또 한 가지 중요한 발견은, 오상순의 책이 양주동, 김영랑, 모윤숙, 김동리, 조연현이 공동집필하여 1950년 초판 발행된 교과서 『중등작문』1, 2, 3(홍지사)을 상당 부분 참고하였다는 것이다. 오상순이 교과서 서술에서 보여주는 작문관은, 실로 양주동 등저 교과서의 작문관 및 그 이론적 바탕이 된 김동리･조연현의 본격문학론-작문론과 상통하는 면이 있다. 그럼에도 두 책 사이에 차이점이 있다면, 양주동 등저의 책은 학생이 모범 예문을 접함으로써 예문 저자의 인격을 본받도록 유도하는 데 비해, 오상순의 책은 학생 스스로 ‘좋은 생활’에서 ‘좋은 글’이 나온다는 것을 명심하고, ‘좋은 생활’이란 무엇인지 탐구하면서 ‘좋은 글’을 기다리는 자기수양적 자세를 상대적으로 강조한다는 점이다.

영문 초록

This study provides a more accurate and detailed analysis of Jungdeung Jakmun (Middle School Composition), a government-approved writing textbook authored by the poet Gongcho Oh Sang-sun and published by Baekyoungsa in 1952. Although this textbook has been briefly mentioned in previous research on the history of Korean language education—mostly limited to its preface and table of contents—it has not yet received focused scholarly attention. Consequently, basic bibliographic verification and a comprehensive explanation of its contents and context were necessary. Through comparison of extant editions, it is inferred that the first edition of Jungdeung Jakmun was published in 1952, not in 1947 as previously believed. Notably, the textbook includes numerous example passages written by right-wing literary figures such as Jo Yeon-hyeon, Kim Dong-ri, Mo Yun-sook, and Yu Chi-jin, all of whom supported the educational policies of Ahn Ho-sang, the philosopher and first Minister of Education who advocated for “Ilminism” at the time. This suggests that beyond teaching writing skills, the textbook also functioned as a vehicle for implicitly transmitting right-wing ideology through the selection of exemplary texts. Another significant finding is that Oh Sang-sun’s textbook draws heavily from another textbook titled Jungdeung Jakmun Volumes 1, 2, and 3, co-authored by Yang Joo-dong, Kim Yeong-rang, Mo Yun-sook, Kim Dong-ri, and Jo Yeon-hyeon, and first published by Hongjisa in 1950. The conception of writing presented in Oh’s textbook aligns closely with that of the work of Yang and others, particularly in its connection to the literary theories of Kim Dong-ri and Jo Yeon-hyeon, who emphasized “pure literature” and the aesthetics of the serious novel. However, a key difference lies in their pedagogical approach: while the 1950 textbook series encouraged students to emulate the personality and moral character of exemplary authors through model texts, Oh Sang-sun’s textbook places greater emphasis on the self-disciplined attitude of waiting for “good writing” to emerge from “good living,” urging students to explore the nature of such a life for themselves.
