이문구의 문학적 실천과 양식적 실험 - 1974~1989년 활동을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 이문구가 자유실천문인협의회에 몸담았던 1974년부터 1989년이라는 시기에 천착하여, 그의 실천적 변혁운동 활동과 함께 다양한 매체에 실렸던 그의 분절된 텍스트들 사이의 관계망을 이해함으로써 1970년대에 집중되어있던 이문구 연구의 지형을 1980년대로 확장하며 그 문학사적 의의를 입체적으로 살펴본다. 이문구는 해당 시기, 단편이나 장편 연작 소설을 집필하는 활동 이외에도 꾸준히 르포와 에세이, 콩트 등을 집필한 바 있는데 현재까지 이러한 글쓰기가 지닌 함의와 문학사적 맥락에 대한 연구는 충분히 논구되지 못했다. 이문구는 군부독재기 폭압적 검열을 겪으며 분야나 장르와 같은 경계를 흩어내고자 하는 문학정신을 내세운 바 있는데, 문학이 실제 기층민중의 삶에 도달하기 위해 보다 쉬운 언어로 전달되어야하며 독자가 일치감을 느낄 수 있는 글을 써야한다고 판단했다. 그의 이 같은 관점은 콩트, 르포, 에세이를 경유하는 양식적 실험을 통해 확인 가능한데, 첫째, 자실이 개편되어갔던 1984년, 잡지 『학원』에 발표한 ｢농촌실태 르포｣, 둘째, 『여고시대』와 같은 매체를 경유한 에세이들, 셋째, 이문구의 『누구는 누구만 못해서 못허나』외 『주말꽁트여행』 등의 콩트 작품들이 이에 해당된다. 특히 이문구는 콩트라는 장르가 지닌 시대적 의미를 인식하며 “시대의 작은 소지품”이라 표현, 그는 작품에 대한 검열을 겪으며 제도문학의 영토 외 공유지로서의 글쓰기가 가능한 여러 매체를 토대로 문학의 외연을 넘나드는 양식적 실험의 장을 마련했던 것으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the period from 1974, when Lee Mun-gu joined the Association of Writers for Freedom and Practice, to 1989, and examines the literary-historical significance of his work by expanding the scope of existing scholarship—which has largely centered on the 1970s—into the 1980s. By analyzing the network of relationships among his fragmented texts published across various media during this time, alongside his engagement in practical and transformative movements, the study offers a more multidimensional understanding of his literary contributions. During this period, in addition to writing short stories and serial novels, Lee Mun-gu consistently produced reports, essays, and conte-style pieces. However, the literary significance and historical context of such writings have yet to be sufficiently examined. Facing the oppressive censorship of the military dictatorship, Lee advanced a literary ethos aimed at blurring conventional boundaries between genres and fields. He believed that literature must reach the lived realities of the grassroots populace, and thus emphasized the use of accessible language and writing that could foster a sense of identification among readers. This perspective is evident in Lee’s formal experimentation with genres such as conte, reportage, and essay. Notable examples include: first, a reportage on rural conditions published in Hakwon in 1984, during a period of restructuring within the Writers’ Association for Freedom and Practice (Jasil); second, essays contributed to publications such as Yeogosidae; and third, various conte works that embody this literary approach. In particular, Lee Mun-gu recognized the historical significance of the conte genre, referring to it as a “small belonging of the times.” Confronted with censorship of his works, he is understood to have opened a space for formal experimentation that traversed the boundaries of institutional literature. Drawing on various media that operated as part of the Commons beyond the territory of official literary institutions, he sought to expand the scope and reach of literary practice.
