이 글은 순문예지 『문예』의 한국전쟁 이전 발간호를 중심으로, 『문예』의 주체들이 단정 수립 이후 어떤 민족문학을 수립하려 했는지, 세계문학으로서의 민족문학의 요건을 어떻게 상정하고 그것을 담론화하였는지를 고찰하였다. 『문예』는 정치적 이념이나 지역성에 종속되지 않는 문학, 즉 ‘자기 생리에서 출발한’ 문학을 강조하며, 새로운 문학적 전통을 창출하려는 시도를 보였다. 청년문학가협회를 중심으로 한 『문예』의 주체들은 ‘결론에서 출발한 문학’을 했던 구세대와 단절하고, 외래 문학을 단순히 추종하는 것이 아니라 주체적으로 ‘섭취와 소화’의 과정을 거쳐 인간의 삶의 본질을 추구하는 새로운 전통을 구축해야 함을 강조했다. 『문예』는 이를 신인추천제 실시와 그에 대한 선후평을 통해 문학방법론에 대한 가이드라인을 제시했다. 이 논문은 『문예』의 문학적 실천이 민족문학을 질적으로 완성된 세계문학으로 세우려는 시도였음을 밝히며, 『문예』가 강조했던 세계문학으로서의 민족문학에 대한 논의가 해방 이후 문학의 바탕이 되었음을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates the early issues of Munye, a pure literary journal published before the outbreak of the Korean War, in order to examine how its contributors sought to establish a new form of national literature after the founding of the Republic of Korea. It analyzes how they envisioned the requirements of national literature as a form of world literature and articulated this vision through critical discourse. Munye emphasized literature “arising from its own organic vitality,” independent of political ideology or regionalism, and sought to create a new literary tradition. The journal’s core members, particularly those affiliated with the Youth Writers’ Association, aimed to sever ties with the older generation’s “literature beginning from conclusions” and instead stressed the necessity of actively “assimilating and digesting” foreign literatures. Through this process, they sought to establish a tradition capable of probing the essence of human life. Furthermore, by implementing a new-writer recommendation system and engaging in subsequent evaluations, Munye provided methodological guidelines for literary practice. This study argues that Munye’s literary experiment was an attempt to develop national literature into a qualitatively accomplished form of world literature, and that its discourse on world literature laid an important foundation for post-liberation Korean literature.
