해방기 『주간서울』 수록 소설의 현실 인식과 정치성

국문 초록

이 논문은 해방기 서울신문사에서 발간된 『주간서울』의 매체 특성과 수록 소설의 정치성을 논의하였다. 자매지 『신천지』와 마찬가지로 중간파의 정치적 인식을 반영한 것이 특징으로, 이는 소설 및 콩트 지면에도 강력한 연계성을 가지고 드러난다. 단독 정부 수립 전후로 중간파가 겪은 현실과의 갈등 양상이 소설들에 표현되어 있다. 그 내용을 살펴보면 첫째, 해방기에 그 당위성이 주장되던 토지개혁이나 반민자 처벌과 같은 개혁이 지연되는 사태에 대한 문제의식을 나타냈다. 둘째, 단독 선거와 단독 정부 수립 이후 요원해져 가는 남북통일에 대한 위기감을 표현하였다. 셋째로는 단선 단정 반대에서 비롯된 제주와 여수･순천 사건의 비극성에 대한 인식을 드러냈다. 그러나 정부와의 대립 심화로 모지(母紙) 서울신문이 정간 사건을 겪게 됨에 따라 군경 토벌대의 입장을 그린 소설이 실리는 변화가 나타난다. 이 변화는 매체 특성과 수록 소설이 연관성을 보인 사례로서 논의될 필요가 있다. 『주간서울』은 중간파 그룹의 현실 감각을 반영한 담론과 문학이 펼쳐지는 장이자 대중계몽의 성격을 강화한 잡지로서 중요한 의의를 갖는다. 반제 반봉건, 좌우 합작, 남북 협상, 단정 반대 등 당면 의제에 관한 이들의 정치적 입장을 반영한 수록 소설들은, 독자 대중에게 각종 현안에 관한 중간파의 문제의식을 환기하는 역할을 하였다. 따라서 『주간서울』 수록 소설 분석을 통해, 기존 연구에서 제한적으로 논의된 해방기 중간파 문학에 확장된 관점에서 접근할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the media characteristics of Weekly Seoul, published by the Seoul Newspaper Company during Korea's liberation period, and analyzes the political stance of the short stories it featured. Like the company's other monthly publication Shincheonji, Weekly Seoul reflected the political views of moderate political groups, a characteristic strongly evident in the short stories published in the magazine. The conflicts between moderate groups and the government, both before and after the establishment of a separate government in South Korea, are expressed through these short stories. An analysis of the story content reveals three major themes. First, there is a critical awareness of delays in essential reforms such as land redistribution and the punishment of Japanese collaborators—issues considered urgent during the liberation period. Second, there is a growing sense of crisis regarding the diminishing prospects for Korean reunification following the establishment of a separate government covering only South Korea. Third, there is an awareness of the tragic nature of the Jeju Uprising and the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion, both of which originated from opposition to unilateral elections and government formation. However, as conflicts between the magazine and the government intensified and the parent company Seoul Newspaper was eventually suspended, a notable shift emerged: short stories began to appear that depicted the perspectives and sentiments of military and police suppression forces. This transformation warrants discussion as it demonstrates the direct connection between media circumstances and the literary content published. Weekly Seoul served as a crucial platform for discourse and literature reflecting the realistic sensibilities of moderate political groups while strengthening its role as a vehicle for public enlightenment. The short stories published in the magazine reflected the political stance of moderate factions on pressing contemporary issues including anti-imperialism, anti- feudalism, left-right political collaboration, North-South negotiations, and opposition to national division. These stories served to remind readers of moderate groups' concerns regarding various current issues. Therefore, through analysis of the short stories published in Weekly Seoul, it becomes possible to approach the literature of political moderates during the liberation period from an expanded perspective that goes beyond the limited scope of existing research.
