국문 초록

본 연구는 유구(오키나와)로 표류한 제주인의 기록 가운데, 그동안 학계에 조명되지 않았던 19세기 말 양우종(梁佑宗)의 『표해일기(漂海日記)』에 주목하였다. 나아가 이와 연결고리를 갖는 당시 일본 외무성(外務省) 자료와의 교차 검토를 통해 해당 표류 사건을 심층적으로 살펴보았다. 『표해일기』는 제주 사람 양우종(梁佑宗, 1863~1917) 등 15명이 1893년(고종 30) 12월 17일 제주 조천포에서 출항하였다가 풍랑을 만나 유구(오키나와)로 표류한 뒤, 1894년 3월경 송환되기까지의 약 3개월간의 전 과정을 기록한 표류기(漂流記)이다. 이 자료는 양우종 일행이 유구 표류 사건을 전하는 유일한 조선측 자료로서, 사료적 가치를 지닌다. 한편 조선 측 자료인 양우종의 『표해일기』 외에도, 일본 외무성 자료인 『곤란선급표민구조잡건·조선국지부(困難船及漂民救助雑件·朝鮮国ノ部)』에는 양우종 일행 15명의 표류 및 구호·송환과정을 상세히 담고 있다. 해당 자료는 『표해일기』에 언급되지 않은 또 다른 정황과 추가적인 사실이 포함되어 있어 양우종 일행의 구체적인 행적을 보다 입체적으로 파악할 수 있다. 이처럼 이국(異國) 표도(漂到) 조선인(제주인)에 대한 서사는 자국의 사료(기록)에만 의존해서는 온전히 파악될 수 없으며, 표도국인 상대국에 남겨진 사료들과의 교차 분석 및 상호 검증을 통해서만 비로소 하나의 표류 사건 전모를 객관적으로 재구성할 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on Pyohae Ilgi (“Record of a Sea Drift”), written by Yang Ujong, a military officer from Jeju, which documents a previously overlooked drift incident involving Jeju residents who were cast adrift to Ryukyu (modern-day Okinawa) in the late 19th century. By cross-analyzing this Korean source with relevant archival materials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, this study offers a deeper investigation into the details of the drift incident. Pyohae Ilgi records the full three-month journey of Yang Ujong (1863-1917) and 14 others who departed from Jocheon Port in Jeju on December 17, 1893, during the 30th year of King Gojong’s reign. After encountering a storm, they drifted to Ryukyu (Okinawa) and were eventually repatriated around March 1894. This journal serves as the only known Korean source documenting this specific incident, thereby holding significant historical value. In addition to Pyohae Ilgi, Japanese archival materials, specifically the Miscellaneous Records on the Rescue of Distressed Ships and Castaways: Joseon Section (Kon'nansenkyū Hyōmin Kyūjo Zakken: Chōsenkoku no Bu), contain detailed accounts of the drift, rescue, and repatriation of the fifteen individuals. These documents provide additional context and information not found in Yang’s journal, allowing for a more comprehensive and multi-dimensional reconstruction of the event. Ultimately, this study highlights that the historical understanding of Korean castaways in foreign territories cannot rely solely on domestic records. It argues that only through cross-referencing and verifying with documents preserved in the host country can the full scope of such drift incidents be objectively reconstructed.
