길희성의 ‘영적 휴머니즘’의 인간관과 그 의의

국문 초록

본 논문은 길희성의 『영적 휴머니즘』(Spiritual Humanism)의 인간 이해의 내용과 그것이 오늘날 가질 수 있는 의의를 살핀다. 길희성의 영적 휴머니즘 은 인간을 기존과 다른 방식으로 이해하였다. 첫째는 기존의 데카르트식의 물질과 정신 구도의 이원론적 접근법이 아닌, 몸(soma)과 정신(psyche)과 영 (pneuma)이라는 삼분법적 요소로 인간을 이해한 것이다. 둘째는 인간의 영 적 측면을 하느님의 모상(imago Dei)으로 설명한 것이다. 이마고 데이는 모 든 인간 안에 선험적으로 주어진 프뉴마이며, 인간을 인간되게 하는 본질적 인 요소이다. 이것은 곧 인간 안의 신적 요소로서, 타락하거나 훼손되지 않고 보전된다. 이와 같은 영적 인간은 두 가지 가능성을 가진다. 하나는 성육신의 가능 성이고 다른 하나는 신인합일의 가능성이다. 길희성은 세계 모든 만물을 신 의 육화로 이해하고, 이에 따라 인간도 신의 육화이다. 물론 모든 존재가 등 가적인 것은 아니고 존재들 간의 차등성이 있다. 또 하나의 가능성 신인합일 에서 인간은, 이마고 데이를 선험적으로 지니고 있어 이미 자신의 존재의 뿌 리인 신을 그리워하고 복귀하려는 영적/형이상학적 에로스를 지니고 있다. 논문은 영적 휴머니즘의 인간관의 의의를 두 가지로 분석한다. 첫째는 인 간 긍정성의 확대이다. 영적 휴머니즘은 그동안 원죄론에 압도당하여 상대 적으로 선포되지 못하였던 이마고 데이를 집중적으로 조명한다. 둘째는 영 적 인간에 대한 이해의 보편적 확대이다. 인간의 영성을 기독교라는 특정 종 교의 범주 안에 가두지 않고, 모든 사람에게 선험적으로 있는 이마고 데이에 집중함으로써 영적 인간의 이해를 보편적으로 확대한다.

영문 초록

This study explores Hee-sung Keel’s understanding of humanity in Spiritual Humanism and examines its significance in today’s world. Hee-sung Keel’s Spiritual Humanism offers a distinctive approach to understanding humanity. First, instead of following the conventional Cartesian dualism of matter and mind, it employs a tripartite framework, distinguishing between the body(soma), mind(psyche), and spirit(pneuma). Second, it interprets the spiritual dimension of humanity through the concept of the imago Dei. The imago Dei is not substantially different from the Holy Spirit, which is endowed in every human being a priori and serves as the fundamental essence of what makes a person truly human. As the divine element within humanity, it remains preserved, never subject to corruption or degradation. Such a spiritual human being possesses two possibilities. First, there is the potential for the incarnation. Hee-sung Keel perceives all things in the world as manifestations of the divine, and within this understanding, humanity itself is also an incarnation of God. However, this does not suggest that all beings hold equal standing. Rather, a hierarchy of existence differentiates them. Second, there is the potential for divine-human unity. Endowed with the imago Dei a priori, human beings inherently yearn for their divine origin, possessing an intrinsic spiritual and metaphysical eros that compels them toward reunion with God. This study examines the significance of Spiritual Humanism’s theological anthropology in two key aspects. First, it expands the affirmation of humanity. Spiritual Humanism brings renewed attention to the imago Dei, which has often been overshadowed by the doctrine of original sin and, consequently, left underemphasized. Second, it broadens the universal understanding of the spiritual human. By focusing on the imago Dei as an a priori reality inherent in all people rather than restricting human spirituality to the confines of Christianity, it advances a more universal understanding of the spiritual human.
