국문 초록

본 연구는 대학생의 독서 실태를 깊이 있게 알아보기 위하여 전공 계열별로 대학생의 읽기 활동과인식을 나누어서 탐구하고 비교 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음의 세 가지 시사점을 제기한다. 첫째, 대학생들의 독서량이 과거보다 급격히 감소했다고 보기는 어렵지만, 기초 학력 부진과 문해력 부족문제가 제기되고 있으며, 독서 활동이 양극화되는 경향이 나타났다. 특히 대학생들은 온라인 정보읽기를 매우 선호하는 모습을 보여주고 있었는데 이것은 독서량이 감소하지는 않았으나 깊이 있는읽기를 어려워하는 대학생들의 읽기 실태를 잘 보여주는 양상이라고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 독서가 ‘학업’보다‘삶과 생활’에 더 도움이 된다고 응답하고 있었다. 이는 독서와 학업의 연계성이 약하다는 것을 시사하며, 대학에서 독서를 학문적 성취와 연결하는 교육이 필요함을 보여준다. 셋째, 전공 계열별로 독서 목적과이유도 차이를 보였는데, 인문사회계열은 여가와 만족을 위해, 이공계열은 학업과 과제 수행을 위해독서를 하는 경향이 강했다. 반면, 비독서의 이유로 인문사회계열은 외부적 요인(학업, 취업 준비 등), 이공계열은 내적 요인(비용, 독서 습관 부족 등)을 주로 꼽았다. 따라서 대학생의 전공 계열에 따른맞춤형 독서 교육의 필요성을 시사할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study investigates university students’ reading activities and perceptions by categorizing and analyzing them based on academic disciplines. The findings reveal three key insights. First, although there has been no significant decline in students’ overall reading volume compared to previous decades, concerns regarding basic academic proficiency and literacy deficiencies persist, with an increasing polarization in reading habits. Notably, students exhibited a strong preference for online reading, suggesting that while the quantity of reading has not decreased, the depth of engagement with texts has weakened. Second, students perceived reading as more beneficial for “life and daily living” rather than for “academic performance.” This indicates a weak linkage between reading and academic success, emphasizing the need for educational strategies that integrate reading with academic development. Third, notable differences emerged across academic disciplines regarding reading purposes and motivations. Humanities students primarily read for leisure and personal enrichment, whereas STEM students engaged in reading mainly for coursework and academic requirements. Furthermore, the reasons for not reading varied: humanities students cited external factors such as academic workload and job preparation, while STEM students identified internal factors such as financial constraints and a lack of established reading habits. These findings underscore the necessity of discipline-specific reading education programs tailored to students’ academic needs and reading behaviors.
