국문 초록

이 연구는 한나 아렌트의 사상을 바탕으로 대학 교양교육의 방향성을 재조명하고, 인간다운 삶을 위한 교양교육의 중요성을 논의하는 것을 목표로 한다. 아렌트는『인간의 조건』(1958)과 『과거와 미래사이』(1961)에서 노동, 작업, 행위로 인간 활동을 구분하면서, 근대 이후 과학기술의 발달로 노동과작업이 강조되는 현실을 비판한다. 그는 인간다운 삶을 위해 복수성에 기초한 행위와 공적인 삶이강조되어야 한다고 보았다. 아렌트의 관점을 적용하면, 교양교육은 단순한 지식이나 기술 습득을 넘어서야 한다. 특히, 그는 실리만을 추구하는 교육 방식이 교양 없는 속물주의를 조장하고, 교양교육을 특정한목적 성취의 도구로 전락시킨다고 진단한다. 대학의 교양교육은 단순한 실용성을 넘어서 인간다운태도를 함양하고, 정치적 참여를 통한 공적인 삶을 강조해야 한다. 그에 의하면 인간다운 교양은 비판적사고와 다수의 목소리를 존중하는 태도이며, 교양교육은 학생들이 자신의 목소리를 내고 타인의 의견을경청하는 열린 토론과 성찰의 과정이 되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to re-examine the direction of modern liberal education in universities based on the philosophy of Hannah Arendt and to discuss the importance of liberal education for a truly human life. In The Human Condition (1958) and Between Past and Future (1961), Arendt categorizes human activities into labor, work, and action, criticizing how modern scientific and technological advancements have prioritized labor and work over action. She argues that a truly human life requires an emphasis on action and public life. Drawing on Arendt’s concepts, this paper asserts that modern liberal education must go beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge and skills. It critiques an education system that prioritizes utility and efficiency, fostering philistinism - an attitude that reduces education to a tool for social status and economic gain. Arendt contends that true liberal education should cultivate attitudes that transcend mere utility and encourage political engagement in public life. Furthermore, the paper discusses how modern society has become a “consumer society,” where education is increasingly tied to economic utility. Arendt warns against this shift, arguing that liberal education should not focus solely on acquiring specific skills but instead foster critical thinking and respect for diverse perspectives. According to Arendt, liberal education should be an open process of discussion and reflection, allowing students to express their own voices while listening to others.
