『효경언해』의 한글 서체 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 1590년경 간행된 것으로 추정되는 활자본(경진자본)인 존경각본과 1666년 간행된 목판본인 규장각본을 비교 검토한 논문이다. 16세기 후반에 제작된 존경각본『효경언해』는『효경대의』와 『효경언해』의 합본으로, 현존하는『효경언해』 중 그 시기가 가장 빠른 것으로 현재 일본 존경각문고에 소장되어 있다. 이러한 서예사적, 국어학적 가치가 큰 존경각본 『효경언해』의 실물은 국내에는 존재하지 않고, 조선학보(朝鮮學報)(제27집)에 영인된 것으로만 연구를 해야 하는 실정이다. 또 한 본인『효경언해』(규장각본)은 존경각본 『효경언해』의 내사기와 언해 양식을 설명하고 있으면서, 사진으로 제공되는 『효경언해』의 실물은 17세기 규장각본『효경언해』 및 17세기 이후의 목판본이 제시되고 있어 서지의 오류를 밝힌다. 그 과정에서 두 이본 간의 비교연구를 통해 16세기 후기 중세국어에서 17세기 근대국어로의 변화 양상을 파악하고, 언해(諺解)방식과 서체 특징을 살펴보았다. 두 이본의 서체 특징은 존경각본 『효경언해』(1590년경)는 딱딱하고 곧은 형의 필획으로 구성된 판본 고체의 전서 자형의 글씨에서 벗어나 필서체에 가까운 약간 부드럽고 유연한 느낌의 서체적 특징이 보이며, 17세기 규장각본 『효경언해』는 한 단계 더 나아가 한자의 해서체에 가까운 서체로 바뀜을 볼 수 있었다. 이로써 두 간행본의 차이점은 16세기와 17세기 서예사적 특징과 그 서체적 특징도 파악할 수 있다. 또한 16세기『효경언해』와 17세기『효경언해』가 설명과 사진이 구분 없이 혼용되어 쓰이고 있으므로, 명확한 구분의 필요성을 제언한다.

영문 초록

This paper compares and examines the Jon-gyeong-gak edition of Hyogyeong-eonhae, believed to have been printed by the Gyeongjinja version(typefaces produced in 1580) and published around 1590, and the Gyujang-gak edition, a woodblock version published in 1666. The Jon-gyeong-gak edition of Hyogyeong-eonhae, produced in the late 16th century, is a combined version of Hyogyeong-daeui and Hyogyeong-eonhae. It is the earliest existing edition of Hyogyeong-eonhae. However, though it has significant value in calligraphy history and linguistics, it is unfortunately not in Korea but is currently housed in the Jon-gyeong-gak Archives in Japan. Thus, researchers can only rely on the reprint version found in volume 27 of Joseon Hakbo(朝鮮學報). The Gyujang-gak edition of Hyogyeong-eonhae records the bestowal of the Jon-gyeong-gak edition and explains its interpretation style; however, there is an error in the bibliography, as the actual photos of Hyogyeong-eonhae are misrepresented as those of a 17th-century Gyujang-gak edition and a woodblock print version from the 17th century onward. Through a comparative study of the two editions, I identified the changes from Middle Age Korean of the late 16th century to Modern Korean of the 17th century. Additionally, I examined the interpretation style and the characteristics of its typefaces. The calligraphic styles of the two editions of Hyogyeong-eonhae exhibit distinct characteristics. The Jon-gyeong-gak edition features a slightly softer and more flexible typeface, resembling cursive fonts breaking away from the block printing Seal script characterized by rigid and straight strokes. The Gyujang-gak edition from the 17th century takes this a step further by adopting a font style closer to the Regular script of Chinese calligraphy. These differences highlight the evolving calligraphic characteristics of the 16th and 17th centuries. Additionally, since explanations and images from the 16th-century and 17th-century versions of Hyogyeong-eonhae are often used interchangeably with no distinction, I recommend clearly distinguishing between the two.
