퇴계 「陶山十二曲」에 대한 서예미학적 고찰 - 한글서예를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선시대 이른바 학자서예가로 평가받는 퇴계 이황(1501∼1570)의「도산십이곡」한글서예의 그 독특한 조형성을 미학과 예술 차원에서 고찰한 논문이다. 그동안 퇴계의 서예미학에 대한 전반적인 연구는 있었지만, 그가 지은 「도산십이곡」한글서예의 독특한 조형성에 대해서는 서예미학 차원에서 심도있게 연구된 바가 없다. 퇴계는 ‘지경(持敬)’에 입각한 심화 차원의 서예미학과 유학의 ‘십육(十六)자 심법(心法)’ 사유를 서예에 적용하였는데, 그 사유에는 주리적 사유에 입각한 ‘방정단중(方正端重)’함을 지향하는 ‘퇴필’의 조형성이 담겨 있다. 도산십이곡」의 창작 동기는 당시 지어진 시들이 ‘긍호방탕(矜豪放蕩)’하고 ‘설만희압(褻慢戲押)’하여 군자가 숭상할 바가 못되고 아울러 ‘불공(不恭)’과 ‘온유돈후(溫柔敦厚)’한 내용이 적은 것을 애석하게 여겼던 것에서 출발한다. 이에 비루한 마음을 씻고 감화되어 분발하고 마음이 화락함을 통해 노래하는 자와 듣는 자가 서로 유익함이 있게 하기 위해 지었다고 한다. 이같은 퇴계「도산십이곡」의 창작 목적에 담긴 문예인식은 그가 지향한 주리(主理) 차원의 ‘理發氣隨[理發而氣隨之]’의 사유 및 지경에 입각한 심화 서예창작 정신이 그대로 적용된 것이다. 이런 점에서 도산십이곡」의 한글 서체에는 퇴계가 지향한 중화미가 실현된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 구체적으로「도산십이곡」의 한글 글씨는 용필에서는 필획의 절제된 흐름과 중봉을 사용하여 어느 한 획도 날카롭지 않기 때문에 절도 있는 힘과 균형을 표현한 중화미를, 결구에서는 글자 내부의 균형과 강약 조절을 통하여 자연스러운 조화미를, 장법에서는 균형 잡힌 배열과 여백을 활용하여 절제와 조화의 미학이 표현된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 결과적으로 퇴계「도산십이곡」의 한글서예 창작은 그가 지향한 철학과 인품이 글씨에 고스란히 담긴 이른바 ‘이발기수’ 차원의 ‘방정단중’한 ‘퇴필’로 나타났음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Toegye Lee Hwang (1501-1570) is recognized as a prominent scholar-calligrapher of the Joseon Dynasty. This study focuses on the distinctive qualities of his Hangeul calligraphy found in Dosansibigok, examining it through the lenses of aesthetics and art. While there are general studies on Toegye's calligraphic aesthetics, a detailed exploration of the unique characteristics of his Hangeul calligraphy in Dosansibigok from a calligraphic aesthetic perspective has yet to be conducted. Toegye's calligraphic aesthetics values holding respectfulness(持敬) in terms of the picture of the mind, and he applied his calligraphic aesthetics and the methods of mind cultivation consisting of 16 characters of Confucianism to calligraphy. The formativeness of Toepil(Toegye's calligraphy) aimed for qualities such as squareness, correctness, neatness, and weight, highlighting the importance of the principle. Toegye expressed concern that the poetry of his time was often too debauched and self-indulgent, unworthy of a virtuous man’s admiration. He believed it lacked respect and offered little content that was gentle and kind, which led him to compose Dosansibigok. He stated that this work was intended to cleanse the mind, inspire and motivate, and create harmony, benefitting both the reciter and the listener. The literary intention behind Toegye's creation of Dosansibigok reflects his belief that the principle issues and the material forces follow, embodying a spirit of calligraphic creation rooted in holding respectfulness. In this context, I found that the Hangeul calligraphic style of Dosansibigok achieved the equilibrium-harmony beauty that Toegye sought. Specifically, in the Hangeul characters of Dosansibigok, Toegye restrained the flow of strokes and centered the brush's tip, ensuring no stroke was overly sharp. This results in the equilibrium-harmony beauty characterized by restrained power and balance. The natural beauty of harmony is evident in the structure of the characters, articulated through the balance and control of strength among the strokes. Moreover, the arrangement of characters, along with the mindful use of margins, conveys the aesthetics of restraint and harmony. Consequently, I confirmed that Toegye’s Hangeul calligraphy in Dosansibigok embodies the philosophy and personality he aspired to express. It materializes as Toepil—a calligraphic style that is square, correct, neat, and weighty, grounded in the belief that the principle issues and the material forces follow.
