국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 요양원에 입소한 노모의 생활세계를 분석하여 이해하는 것이다. 이를 위해 자문화기술지 방법에 따라 접근하여 연구를 수행하였다. 즉, 노모의 생활세계에 대한 연구자의 자기-내러티브를 반성적인 회상과 성찰을 통해 ‘두텁게 기술’하였고, 이후 이를 삼각검증 자료에 기초하여 여러 차례 반복해서 고쳐 쓰는 글쓰기 작업을 하였으며, 이어 연속적 분석과 재구성적 분석 방법에 따라 이론적 포화가 이루어질 때까지 고쳐 쓰는 글쓰기 작업을 반복하였다. 그 결과, 요양원에 입소한 노모의 생활세계는 ‘자립생활이 가능하였던 과거 집에서의 삶’ 및 집에 돌아가 계속해서 그렇게 ‘자립생활을 이어나가고 싶어 하는 미래의 삶’에 기대어 사는, ‘자립생활이 좌절된, 현재가 없는 생존할 뿐인 삶’이 되고 있었다. 그리고 이러한 노모의 ‘현재가 없는 생존할 뿐인 삶’은 외박 중 당한 사고로 와상상태가 된 이후에는 기대한 ‘미래의 삶’조차 멀어진 ‘생존할 뿐인 환자로서의 삶’으로 변화되어 이어지고 있었으며, 와상생활이 장기화되는 과정을 거치면서는 ‘생존할 뿐인 환자로서의 삶’마저도 ‘귀가’가 이승이 아닌 저승의 ‘집’으로 이루어질지도 모른다는 예감으로 죽음에 대한 불안과 동시에 동경을 하기도 하는 삶으로 변화되어 이어지고 있었다. 따라서 노부와 자녀 등 가족들은 노모가 ‘현재’를 ‘있는 그대로’ 수용함으로써 ‘자립생활이 좌절된, 현재가 없는 생존할 뿐인 환자로서의 삶’으로부터 벗어나 ‘돌봄을 받으며 현재를 사는 사람으로서의 삶’으로 나아갈 수 있도록 지원하는 노력을 하고 있으나, 주목할 만한 도움이 되지는 못한 상황에 처해 있었다. 이에, 이러한 연구결과에 기초하여 노인복지실천에 시사하는 함의를 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The aim of the study is to analyze and understand the life worlds of my mother in an elderly care home, with autoethnographic method. For this purpose, my self-narrative on the life worlds of my mother was “thick-described” through self-recall and self-reflection. Then, based on the triangulation data, I rewrote it repeatedly. Finally, they were analyzed, with the method of continuous and reconstructive analysis and repeatedly rewritten until “theoretical saturation” was achieved. The result shows that her life worlds in the care home had become ‘existing without present, with frustration at her inability to live an independent life’, ‘living at her own home as she did in the past when it was possible for her to live an independent living’ and ‘insisting she wants to go home and continue living her independent life in the future as she did before’. Furthermore, her ‘existence without present’ was being transformed into an ‘existence as a patient’ being further away from the ‘a life in the future’ that she expected since she became bedridden after an accident during a home visit. In the protracted process of living as a bedridden patient, even her ‘existence as a patient’ has been transformed into fear of death and longing for death simultaneously, with the realization that her ‘return to home’ may not be a transit to her home and rather to the other side of the world. Under the situation, my family members were trying to help my mother move away from ‘existence as a patient living without present, frustrated at the independent living’ by helping her accept the present as it is. It is expected that the study results to give implications for social welfare practice for the elderly.
