홍시로 바라본 숭덕 연간 조·청 외교

국문 초록

홍시는 조선에서 흔히 접할 수 있는 과일이었지만, 심양이라는 공간에서는 보다 큰 가치를 부여받을 수 있었다. 홍시는 천총 연간부터 조선에서 심양으로 반출되었다. 조선과 청이 군신관계를 수립하고 양국 관계가 진전되는 숭덕 연간에 이르러서 심양으로 보내지는 홍시의 수량이 일정하게 고정되기 시작하였다. 이러한 양상은 1640년을 전후로 뚜렷해지는데 매년 연례적으로 보내는 홍시의 수량은 3,000개로, 팔기 무역을 위해 보내지는 수량은 24,000개로 고정된 것이다. 심양으로 이동한 홍시에 대한 대가는 조선의 입장에서 아쉬운 수준이었다. 조선의 시세로 따져보았을 때 조선은 최소 8배에 달하는 손실을 감수해야 했다. 하지만 인조는 홍시를 패배의 대가로만 바라보지 않았다. 오히려 홍시를 선물하여청의 유력 정치가와 관계 개선을 도모하였다. 한편 홍시는 또 다른 갈등의 씨앗이 되기도 하였다. 대조선 외교 업무를 담당하는 청역들은 음성적인 방식으로 외교적 주선의 대가를 수령하곤 하였는데 홍시도 그 대상 중 하나였다. 정명수 등 호부 계통 청역들의 홍시 횡령은 누군가에게는기회로 여겨졌다. 하지만 대조선 외교 업무의 최고 실권자 잉굴다이의 비호를 받는 정명수 등은 이들의 도전을 차례로 무력화시켰고, 오히려 자신의 지위를 공고하게 다지는데 성공하였다.

영문 초록

Ripe persimmons were a common fruit in Joseon, but in Shenyang, they were given greater value. Ripe persimmons were exported from Joseon to Shenyang from the Tiancong era onwards. By the time Joseon and Qing established a vassal-suzerain relationship and bilateral relations progressed during Emperor Chongde’s reign, the quantity of ripe persimmon sent to Shenyang began to stabilize. This trend became evident around 1640, with the annual quantity of ripe persimmon sent fixed at 3,000 pieces, and the quantity sent for the Eight Banners trade fixed at 24,000 pieces. The price paid for the ripe persimmons transported to Shenyang was disappointing from Joseon’s perspective. Considering the market price, Joseon suffered a loss of at least eight times the value when it handed over the ripe persimmons to the Qing Dynasty. However, King Injo did not view ripe persimmons as merely a symbol of defeat. Instead, he sent ripe persimmons as a gift to improve relations with influential Qing politicians. However, ripe persimmons also became another source of conflict. Qing officials in charge of diplomatic affairs with Joseon sometimes received personal compensation for diplomatic mediation, and ripe persimmons were one of the items involved. The embezzlement of ripe persimmons by certain officials was seen as an opportunity for challenge by some. However, Chŏng Myŏngsu and others, who were under the protection of Inggūldai, the highest authority in Joseon’s diplomatic affairs, successfully neutralized these challenges one by one and instead solidified their own positions.
