국문 초록

대한불교조계종에서 소장하고 있는 《사찰전화피해상황조사보고(寺刹戰禍被害狀況調査報告)》는 그동안 거의 공개되지 않았다. 이 보고서는 두 가지 주요 목적 아래 작성된 것으로 보인다. 첫째, 1952년 일본 도쿄에서 열린 세계불교도회의에서 전쟁의 참혹함을 알리고 국제사회의 관심을 환기하기 위해서였다. 둘째, 향후 국가 차원의 보상 청구를 위한 기초 자료로 활용하려는 목적이 있었다. 그러나 중앙교구의 반복된 요청에도 불구하고 보고서 제출은 원활하게 진행되지 않았다. 또한, 당시 불교계가 입은 피해를 세계에 알리려는 노력의 성과가 어느 정도였는지도 확인하기 어렵다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 보고서가 갖는 의미는, 매우 이른 시점에 중앙교구의 주도로 피해에 관한 조사가 이루어졌다는 점이다. 특히, 사찰에서 직접 조사하여 보고한 인명 피해 내용이 포함되어 있다는 점에서 중요한 가치를 지닌다. 지금까지 한국전쟁을 전후하여 불교계에 발생한 물적 피해에 관해서는 일정 수준 이상의 사실이 밝혀졌지만, 인명 피해에 관한 조사는 미흡하다. 이러한 상황에서 이 보고서가 비교적 상세히 인명 피해를 밝히고 있는 점은 중요한 시사점을 제공한다. 다만, 다른 문헌과 비교했을 때 피해 원인과 발생 시기 등에서 차이가 있으며, 이 보고서에만 확인되는 희생자도 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 한국전쟁을 전후하여 발생한 불교계의 인명 피해를 명확히 규명하기 위해서는 더욱 폭넓고 장기적이며, 체계적인 계획수립이 필수적이다.

영문 초록

The 《Report on the War Damages to Buddhist Temples(寺刹戰禍被害狀況調査報告)》, held by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, has remained largely undisclosed until now. This report appears to have been created with two primary objectives. First, to raise awareness about the horrors of the War and draw attention to its devastation, particularly during the 1952 World Buddhist Conference in Tokyo. Second, to serve as a resource for future advocacy for state compensation. Despite repeated requests from the central temple district, it is assumed that the final report was not fully realized. Furthermore, it remains unclear to what extent the efforts to inform the global community about the impact of the Korean War on Korean Buddhism have yielded tangible results. Nonetheless, the significance of this document lies in the fact that it represents one of the earliest attempts to systematically investigate and report on the wartime damage to Buddhist temples. Importantly, it contains detailed records of human casualties within the temples, a facet largely under-researched compared to material damage. While the extent of material losses to the Buddhist community during and after the war has been somewhat clarified, the documentation of human casualties remains insufficient, particularly in comparison to other religious communities. The relative detail found in this report, especially regarding human casualties, offers substantial insights. However, when compared with other documents, there are differences in the causes of damage and the timing of its occurrence, and there are also victims who are only mentioned in this report. Therefore, in order to clearly identify the human casualties suffered by the Buddhist community before and after the Korean War, it is essential to establish a broader, longer-term, and systematic investigation plan.
