한국 의사학과 의료인문학의 위상과 역할

국문 초록

이제 의과대학에서 더 이상 의료인문학을 한다는 것은 아주 낯설지는 않은 듯 보인다. 그러나 여전히 의료인문학이 앞으로 어떻게 나아가야 할지 방향은 선명하지 않은 듯하다. 2024년 의정사태나 의과대학 중심의 의료시스템과학 도입 움직임은 의료인문학의 방향에 대한 고민을 깊게 한다. 의사학을 비롯한 의료인문학의 방향을 살피기 위해 이들 학문의 위상을 먼저 살펴본다. 의사학 및 의료인문학의 정의로부터 시작하였고 이들 분야가 한국에서 도입된 역사와 걸어온 맥락을 살피며, 의료인문학의 현 시점을 살펴보고 앞으로의 방향을 가늠해 보고자 한다. 이들 학문이 학제로서 단일하게 위상을 평가하기 어렵다는 점을 짚고 이들 학문 분야의 도입과 성장이 글로벌화된 의학교육의 흐름과 더불어 한국 의료의 위기를 배경으로 이루어졌음을 살핀다. 또한 한국 의료인문학의 현재가 서구의 그것과 같지 않음을 상기하고자 한다. 본 글은 의사학을 비롯한 의료인문학이 한국의 의(醫)와의 관련성을 공고히 하면서 의(醫)를 둘러싼 물음에 응답이 되고 의(醫)를 둘러싼 새로운 개입과 시도가 되어야 한다고 주장한다. 이는 비단 의과대학 내부에만 국한된 것이 아니며, 다양한 외부적 시도들을 포괄할 수 있다.

영문 초록

It seems that medical humanities are no longer an unfamiliar concept in medical schools. However, the future direction of medical humanities remains unclear. Recent events like the 2024 physicians’ protest and the move to introduce a health systems science curriculum in medical schools have deepened concerns about the direction of medical humanities. To examine the future direction of medical humanities, including the history of medicine, we will first look at their current status. Starting with definitions of the history of medicine and medical humanities, we will explore their introduction and historical context in Korea, analyze their current state, and consider their future direction. It is important to note that it is difficult to evaluate the status of these fields as a single discipline, and their introduction and growth in Korea took place against the backdrop of a crisis in Korean medicine and the trend toward globalized medical education. We also need to remember that the current state of medical humanities in Korea is not the same as that in the West. This article argues that medical humanities, including the history of medicine, should solidify their relationship with Korean medicine and provide answers to questions surrounding it, becoming a new form of intervention and an attempt to address the challenges in the medical field. This is not limited to medical schools but can encompass various external initiatives as well.
