국문 초록

This study investigated the impact of high school academic track and completion of science inquiry subjects on the academic achievement of first-year nursing students. As the Korean high school curriculum has shifted toward the integration of humanities and sciences, there has been increasing diversity in nursing students’ educational backgrounds. However, nursing remains a science-based discipline that requires substantial foundational knowledge in subjects such as chemistry and biology. Data were collected from first-year nursing students at a university in Korea regarding their high school track (humanities or science), completion of Chemistry I/II and Biology I/II, basic nursing science course scores (anatomy and physiology), and Grade Point Average (GPA). Statistical analysis revealed that students from the natural sciences track and those who had completed science inquiry subjects achieved significantly higher grades in anatomy, physiology, and GPA compared to their peers from the humanities track or those who had not taken these subjects. These results are consistent with previous domestic and international research showing that prior science coursework contributes to better performance and smoother adaptation in health-related majors. Although the initial academic gap between tracks was pronounced, prior studies suggest that this difference may decrease with continued study and appropriate support. These findings underscore the importance of assessing students’ prerequisite knowledge at admission and providing targeted academic interventions, such as remedial science courses and mentoring, for those with less science background. Nevertheless, the study has limitations, including its single-institution sample and reliance on self-reported data. Future research should extend to multi-site and longitudinal studies to better understand the long-term effects of high school science preparation on nursing students’ academic and clinical success.
