국문 초록

Smilax china L., a vining shrub in the Liliaceae family, is found in East Asia, including Korea, Japan, China and the Philippines. Smilax china L. has long been known for its detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties in traditional medicine. In this study, we predicted that there is a difference in the efficacy of the male and female roots of Smilax china L. and confirmed the anti-inflammatory activity of Smilax china L. through cell experiments to confirm the potential of Smilax china L. as a functional material. The roots of female Smilax china L. were extracted with 50% and 100% ethanol and hydrothermal water to determine their anti-inflammatory activity and associated cytokines by cell culture, MTT assay, RT-PCR, and ELISA. In anti-inflammatory tests on RAW 264.7 cells induced with LPS, the pro-inflammatory substance, the water extract showed the most effective anti-inflammatory effect among the three extracts. Also to study the mechanism of anti-inflammatory activity, the expression of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β was tested using each extract, and the RT-PCR results showed a decrease in TNF-α and IL-1β, and the ELISA showed a decrease in TNF-α. In conclusion, these results indicate that Smilax china L. root extract has anti-inflammatory activity in cellular experiments and that the cytokines involved in this anti-inflammatory activity are mainly TNF-α.
