영화 의 서사에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 로버트 레드퍼드 감독의 영화 The Horse Whisperer(1998)를 대상으로, 그 서사에 내재한 교감·치유·통제의 코드와 인간 중심적 가치관을 비판적으로 해석하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이 영화는 인간과 말의 정서적 유대와 회복을 그린 감동 서사로 평가되지만, 동물복지와 젠더, 자연 재현의 관점에서 보면 통제와 복종의 질서가 정서적 미학 속에 은폐되어 있다. 이를 규명하기 위해 본 연구는 FAWC(2009)의 5대 자유(Five Freedoms)와 Mellor & Beausoleil(2015)의 5 Domains Model을 적용하여 영화 속 말의 복지 상태를 분석하였고, Singer(1989)와 Regan(1983)의 동물윤리 이론, Gaard(1993)와 Plumwood(1993)의 에코페미니즘 이론을 토대로 윤리적·철학적 해석을 시도하였다. 분석 결과, 영화 속 교감의 서사는 말의 자율성과 감정적 복지를 억압한 채 인간의 성장과 구원을 중심으로 재편된 구조를 보였다. 남성 조련자는 이성적 주체로, 여성과 동물은 감정적 타자로 설정되며, 자연은 통제 가능한 공간으로 재현되었다. 이는 교감의 서사로 포장된 지배와 통제의 구조를 드러내며, 복지·윤리·미학이 교차하는 현대 스포츠영화의 윤리적 문제점을 나타낸다. 결론적으로, The Horse Whisperer는 감동과 치유의 표면 아래에서 인간 중심적 질서를 재생산하는 복합적 텍스트로 평가된다. 본 연구는 향후 스포츠 영화와 승마 산업 전반에서 윤리적 감수성, 복지 담론, 생태적 서사를 확장하는 기초를 제공할 것이다.

영문 초록

The Horse Whisperer (1998) appears to depict a healing relationship between humans and horses, yet its narrative conceals structures of control and subordination. This study critically examines the film’s narrative codes through the frameworks of animal welfare theory (FAWC, 2009; Mellor & Beausoleil, 2015) and ecofeminism (Gaard, 1993; Plumwood, 1993). The analysis reveals that the film’s portrayal of empathy suppresses the autonomy and emotions of the horse, reconfiguring healing as an aestheticized form of human domination. The male trainer is represented as a rational agent, while the woman and the horse are constructed as emotional others within a controllable natural space. Consequently, the film’s sentimental imagery of healing reproduces an anthropocentric order, masking ethical tensions between beauty and control. This study underscores the need for critical perspectives in sports film research that integrate animal welfare, ecological ethics, and cultural discourse.
