국문 초록

본고는 김인순의 『춘향』을 연구 대상으로 삼아, 작품에 등장하는 기억을 잊게 하는 약 ‘오색’에 주목하여, 이 약이 작품에서 가지는 진정한 효과와 상징적 의미를 분석하였다. 우선, 2장에서는 춘향의 신성성과 그녀가 해독할 수 없는 ‘오색’ 간의 충돌 양상을 고찰하였다. 또한, ‘오색’의 문헌적 기록을 바탕으로, ‘오색’이 원점으로 회귀하게 하는 효과를 지닌 신성한 약임을 확인했다. 3장에서는 이러한 ‘오색’의 효과를 바탕으로, ‘오색’을 마신 향 부인과 변학도의 서사적 역할 및 그 상징성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 두 인물 모두 욕망과 현실간의 괴리로 인해 고통을 받았던 존재임을 확인하였으며, ‘오색’은 그들에게 원점으로 돌아갈 기회를 제공한다. 4장에서는 ‘오색’이 ‘또 다른 남원부’라는 이상향으로 가게 할 수 있는 매개체 역할을 한다고 밝혔다. 또한 춘향이 신성성을 지닐 수 있었던 이유는 그에게 결핍이 없기 때문으로 분석했다. 더불어, 2장에서 언급된 춘향의 신성성과 해독할 수 없는‘오색’ 간의 충돌을 ‘오색’이 가지는 불가역성과, 현실적 한계의 반영 두 측면에서 분석했다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 『춘향』이 <춘향전>의 재창작으로서 가지는 의미를 작품의 서사적 독창성, 사회적 현실 반영, 동양 철학과의 결합이라는 측면에서 분석하였다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on the concept of “Osaek” in Kim In-Soon’s “Ch’unhyang” and analyzes its meaning and narrative effects. Chapter 2 examines how “Osaek” is depicted in the text and its effects. Based on this analysis, the true meaning of “Osaek” is derived by integrating its depiction in the work with its literary and historical records. The analysis reveals that “Osaek,” which has the effect of making one lose their memories, aligns with the original state of objects as represented in the concept of Taeguk (the Great Ultimate). Therefore, “Osaek” functions as a sacred remedy in Chunhyang, symbolically returning characters to their origins. In Chapter 3, the true meaning of “Osaek,” explored in Chapter 2, is connected to its creator, producer, and consumer, analyzing their relationships with it. The study finds that the creator of “Osaek,” Yi Kyugyeong, and its consumers, Madam Hyang and Byeon Hakdo, are all individuals marked by a significant gap between their desires and reality. This signifies that all these characters live with a sense of deficiency. However, unlike them, Chunhyang, who is free of such deficiencies, ultimately possesses the power to create “Osaek.” In conclusion, this study examines the narrative effects of “Osaek” and its implications for the reinterpretation of The Tale of Chunhyang. Contrary to the virtuous Chunhyang in The Tale of Chunhyang, the Chunhyang in Kim In-Soon’s “Ch’unhyang” ends her story as a courtesan. This significant divergence from the original work is striking to readers. However, the sacred remedy “Osaek” serves to mitigate the shock of this reversal. Moreover, despite being endowed with divine abilities, Chunhyang’s inability to decode the effects of “Osaek,” a remedy she herself created, leads to a sense of discord for readers. However, this discord ultimately makes it easier for readers to accept the radically overturned plot of the story. “Ch’unhyang” has been recognized for its literary value. It received significant acclaim, such as the esteemed Junma Award in China, and has been translated into various languages, including English and Korean. “Osaek” not only connects the two halves of the narrative but also serves as a crucial element linking the primary characters of the story. However, previous research has paid little attention to “Osaek.” By defining the meaning of “Osaek” within the work and analyzing its narrative effects, this study aims to provide a new understanding of Chunhyang while also contributing to the broader scholarship on The Tale of Chunhyang.
