The Relationships Among Attachment, Self-efficacy, and Career Maturity in Korean Adolescents

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between career maturity and parental attachment among high school adolescents, and investigated the mediating effects of peer attachment, teacher attachment, and self-efficacy, thereby enhancing the understanding of the complex process of adolescent’career maturity and suggesting strategies to improve it. Drawing on prior research, the study specifically categorized attachment into parental, peer, and teacher attachment to explore the pathways through which these forms of attachment influence adolescents’ career maturity. Data from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th waves of the Korea Youth Panel Survey (KYPS) were analyzed. The findings were as follows. First, the importance of parental attachment for career maturity was confirmed. Parental attachment not only had a direct effect on adolescents' career maturity, but also influenced peer and teacher attachment, which in turn affected career maturity via self-efficacy. Second, self-efficacy directly impacted career maturity, and was found to be closely related to peer and teacher attachment as mediating variables. These results highlight the need for strategies that enhance adolescents’ self-efficacy, such as peer- and teacher-centered activities within school settings. Third, the study identified a complex pathway influencing adolescents’ career maturity. Parental attachment exerted both direct and indirect effects on career maturity through peer and teacher attachment and self-efficacy. This suggests that multi-faceted interventions are possible and necessary to support adolescents’ career development.

영문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 고등학교 청소년의 진로성숙과 부모애착과의 관계를 살펴보고, 또래애착 및 교사애착, 자기효능감의 매개효과를 검토함으로써 청소년의 진로성숙의 복잡한 과정을 이해하고 이들의 진로성숙을 높이기 위한 대안을 제시하는데 있다. 특히 본 연구는 선행연구에 근거하여 애착을 부모애착, 또래애착, 교사애착으로 구분함으로써 다양한 애착이 청소년의 진로성숙에 이르는 경로를 보다 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 한국청소년패널조사 (Korea Youth Panel Survey: KYPS) 3, 4, 5차년도 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 진로성숙도에 대한 부모애착의 중요성을 확인할 수 있었다. 부모애착은 진로성숙도에 직접적 영향을 미칠 뿐 아니라 또래애착과 교사애착에 영향을 미치고, 이들 요인들은 다시 자기효능감을 통해 진로성숙도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 자기효능감은 진로성숙도에 직접적으로 영향을 미칠 뿐 아니라 또래, 교사의 애착변수들의 매개변수로서 진로성숙도와 밀접한 관련이 있음을 알 수 있다. 이는 청소년의 자기효능감을 높이기 위한 전략이 필요함을 의미하는데, 이를 위해 학교에서 청소년의 자기효능감을 높이기 위한 또래 및 교사와 함께하는 활동들이 제시될 수 있다. 셋째, 청소년의 진로성숙에 대한 복잡한 경로를 확인할 수 있었다. 부모애착은 진로성숙에 직접적으로 영향을 미치기도 하지만, 또래애착과 교사애착 그리고 자기효능감을 통해 진로성숙도를 설명함으로써, 청소년의 진로성숙도의 경로를 보다 구체적으로 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이는 청소년의 진로성숙도를 높이기 위한 대안으로 다양한 측면에서의 개입이 가능함을 보여주는 것이라 하겠다.
