과학과 과학 전쟁에 대한 문화적 고찰 : 과학지상주의를 경계하며

국문 초록

1990년대 후반에 세계 인문학계와 과학계 사이에서 과학 전쟁(Science Wars)이 발발했었다. 그 당시에는 여러 학술 단체에서 의견들을 공개적으로 천명하는 등 상당히 시끄러운 사건이었다. 기본적으로 자연과학(natural science)에 대한인문학계와 과학계의 상이한 이해에 근거했다. 과학의 객관성이 정말 절대적으로 있다고 믿을 수 있는 근거는 무엇인가라는 질문이 핵심 주제였다. 과학에 대한 이해는 지적 세계의 두 진영, 즉 객관주의자(objectivist)와 주관주의자(subjectivist)로 나뉘어져 있다. 과학 전쟁은 과학을 객관적이고 보편적인 지식 체계라고 주장하는 과학적 실재론 진영과 과학은 객관적인 진리가 아니며 사회문화적 조건의 영향을 크게 받는 지식일 뿐이라고 주장하는 과학적 반실재론 진영이 논쟁한 사건이다. 그런데 사실 과학이 실재(reality)를 있는 그대로 설명하는 내용인지, 도구 혹은 사회문화적 산물인지는 정확하게 알 길이 없을 것 같다. 인간은 신이 아닌 불완전한 존재이기 때문이다. 양 진영의 논리가 모두 다 그 진영의 시각을 충분히 감안해서 깊게 본다면 정말로 그렇게만 보인다는 측면이 있다. 과학 전쟁은 영원히 끝나지 않을 수 있는 오래된 역사적 논쟁의 연장선상에 있다. 같은 사물을 어떻게 보느냐에 따라 그에 대한 내용이 달라질 수 있는 것처럼, 과학 역시 어떤 관점으로 보느냐에 따라 달라질 수 있다는 점을 이해해야 할 듯하다. 다만 확실한 것은 과학의 위치나 위상 논란에 이끌리게 되어 과학지상주의에 빠지게 된다면 인간의 미래가 위험할 수 있다는 점이다. 본고는 이 견지에서 과학 전쟁의 기원과 주관주의자와 객관주의자 간의 논쟁 상황 및 과학지상주의 개념에 대해 추적해 보았다. 과학과 과학을 바라보는 입장(과학철학, 과학지식사회학 등을 포함하는)에 대한 문화적 이해의 글이며, 과학지상주의의 위험성을 상기시키고자 의도한 글이다.

영문 초록

In the late 1990s, science wars broke out globally between the academic communities of the humanities and the sciences. At the time, it was a rather noisy affair, with several academic organizations publicly stating their opinions. It was based on the different understandings of natural science between the academic communities of the humanities and the sciences. At the heart of it all was the question of on what basis natural science can be believed to be truly and absolutely objective. The understanding of science is divided into two camps in the intellectual world: objectivists and subjectivists. The debate pits the scientific realist camp, which argues that science is an objective and universal system of knowledge, against the scientific anti-realist camp, which argues that science is not objective truth, but only knowledge that is heavily influenced by socio-cultural conditions. In fact, it seems that there is no way to know exactly whether science or scientific theories are descriptions of reality as it is, or whether they are tools or socio-cultural products. Both science and humanities are studied by human beings, who are, unlike God, imperfect beings. If you look deep enough and consider the perspective of the other side, the logic of both camps sounds right. It’s a continuation of an ancient debate that may never end. It’s important to understand that just as how you look at the same thing can change what you see, you can have different views on science depending on how you look at it. What is clear, however, is that the future of humanity is at risk if we allow ourselves to be drawn into the debate over the place or status of science and fall into the trap of scientism. From this perspective, this paper traces the origins of the science wars, the context of the debate between subjectivists and objectivists, and the concept of scientism. This article is a cultural understanding of science and the ways of looking at science (including philosophy of science and sociology of scientific knowledge), and is intended to remind us of the dangers of scientism..
