퍼스(Peirce)의 기호학적 관점에 의한 그림책 분석 - 이수지의『동물원』을 중심으로 -

국문 초록

그림책은 글과 그림이 서로 조화, 교섭하는 가운데 의미를 만들어내는 유기적 복합체(서정숙, 2004)로 이에 대한 해석을 위해서는 기호학적 관점에서의 읽기가 필요하다고 본다. 이에 따라 문학작품인 동시에 시각적 예술형식(Marantz, 1977)이기도한 그림책의 특성을 고려하여, 최근 광고, 영상매체, 미학분야에서 영상(이미지)언어 분석에 널리 사용되고 있는 Peirce의 기호학적 관점을 토대로 그림책 분석틀을 마련하여 분석해봄으로써 그 가능성과 유용성을 알아보고자 하였다. Peirce의 기호학적 관점을 토대로 우리나라 그림책 이수지의 『동물원』을 분석해 본 결과, 그림책의 글과 그림의 상호작용 관계를 명확하게 볼 수 있었고, 환상과 현실의 경계에서 다의적으로 해석되는 의미작용이 논리적으로 증명됨을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 주변텍스트의 활용과 동시대의 문화와 시대상을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 따라서 ‘Peirce의 삼원적 관계에 기초한 그림책 분석틀’은 그림책의 의미생성과정을 분석하는 데 유용하며, 앞으로도 이 분석틀을 통해 좀 더 다양한 장르의 그림책을 분석하는 폭넓은 연구가 가능할 것으로 본다.

영문 초록

Since a picturebook is an organic complex made by an interaction and harmonization between texts and images (Seo, 2004), interpretation in a semiotic perspective is required for analysis of a picturebook. Recently, Peirce’s semiotics has been widely used for video language analysis in the field of advertising, visual media, and aesthetics. Noting that a picturebook exhibits the characteristics of literal work and visual art simultaneously, this work proposes a picturebook analysis framework based on Peirce’s semiotic perspective and analyzes the picturebook using this frame. The potential and effectiveness to apply the suggested framework to picturebook analysis is examined through this study. A picturebook by Suzy Lee, “The Zoo,”was selected for the analysis. By using the proposed framework, it was possible to reveal clearly how texts and illustrations interact with each other and to show logically that the polysemantic signification takes place between fantasy and reality. The application of the framework was feasible to analyze how the paratexts are utilized and how contemporary culture and times are reflected in the picturebook. Thereby, the proposed picturebook analysis framework based on Peirce’s semiotic triangle is shown to be effective in analyzing the process of signification. Further studies to employ the proposed frame would be possible for analyzing picturebooks in various genres.
