따돌림에 대한 다문화적 이해 : 미국의 사례를 통한 반영–쥬디 블룸의『블러버』,『이기의 집』을 중심으로

국문 초록

전 세계적으로 심각한 사회문제로 대두된 따돌림의 문제는 남이 아닌 내가 될 수도 있다는 것을 인지하는 것이 필요하다. 이 연구는 따돌림의 문제는 다문화사회의 기본국가라 볼 수 있는 미국의 사례를 중심으로 한국에 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지 찾고자 하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 더불어 다문화사회 속에서 따돌림의 문제에 대한 인지가 아이들의 삶에 중요한 표본이 될 수 있음을 강조하고자 하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 그래서 이 논문은 미국의 따돌림의 사례를 문학을 기반으로 하여 현대 한국에서 어떠한 방향으로 적용할 수 있는지 생각해 볼 수 있다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 미국의 쥬디 불룸 작가의 두 권의 책을 선정하였다. 이 책의 분석을 통해, 연구자는 과거 미국의 사례가 현재 한국의 상황에까지 연결될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 미국의 1970년대는 경제발전이 크게 일어난 변화의 시기로, 발전과 함께 사회의 이면에 문제점이 야기되었다. 현재 우리나라는 이미 경제발전을 이룬 후라고 볼 수도 있다. 그러나 2020년 후 우리는 더 큰 경제 변화 속에서 아이들에 대한 문제들이 오히려 빈번히 발생하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 작가가 제안한 책 속의 다양한 문제들은 사회라는 큰 변혁안에서 가장 중요한 대상이 되는 아동에 대한 간과로 시작되었다. 작가의 여러 책 중에서 『블러버』와 『이기의 집』은 학교폭력과 인종차별이라는 ‘따돌림’의 문제를 전면에 보여주었다. 작가는 현실을 바로 이해하기 위해서 당시의 시대상과 아동에 대한 정확하게 인지해야 한다고 보았다. 이 논문은 첫째, 현대 한국의 다문화사회 속에서 학교와 인종에 대한 ‘따돌림’이란 주제가 얼마나 중요한 문제인지 다루고 있다. 둘째, 이 문제해결을 위해 연구자는 미국 격변의 시대의 문제들이 담긴 작가의 책을 통해서 분석했다. 이것은 현대 한국의 변화 속에 따돌림을 경험한, 혹은 진행형인 아이들의 문제에 대한 또 다른 방안이 될 수 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

The issue of bullying has emerged as a serious social problem around the world, and it is necessary to recognize that anyone can fall victim to bullying, as well. The purpose of this study was to determine how the problem of bullying is connected to Korea, focusing on the case of the United States, which can be considered a basis for a multicultural society. To this end, the goal of this study was to emphasize that recognizing the bullying issue in a multicultural society can be important in children’s lives. This paper especially offers a chance to think about directions used in American cases of bullying to be applied to the modern society of South Korea based on the literature. For this purpose, this paper selected two books by the American author Judy Bloom. Through the analysis of these books, the researcher confirmed that past American cases can be connected to the current situation in Korea. The US underwent huge changes following remarkable economic development in the 1970s, and its development was accompanied by issues in the dark side of society. Today, it can be said that South Korea already achieved economic development. However, we recognize it has been witnessing more frequent issues involving children since 2020 amid even bigger economic changes. Blume has raised a variety of issues in her books, such as people neglecting children who are the most important resource within the grand revolution of society. Of her many books, Blubber and Iggie’s House presents the issue of “bullying” involving school violence and racial discrimination, bring it to the forefront. She argues that people should accurately recognize the aspects of the times and children as well to understand the reality of the situation correctly. First, this study deals with how important the topic of “bullying” against different races in school is as a topic in the modern multicultural society of South Korea. Second, to this end, the researcher analyzed Blume"s books that address the issues of America"s turbulent times. This study proposes some measures to address children"s issues of bullying.
