국문 초록

본 논문은 비슷한 시기에 출간된 두 탈북 정치활동가의 자전적 서사를 통한 정체성 변화와 정치참여에 영향을 미치게 된 과정 등을 살펴본 글이다. 연구에서 살펴보려는 두 명의 탈북 정치활동가는 보수진영과 진보진영에서 활동하고 있으며 비슷한 나이와 성장배경, 한국으로의 입국과 대학과 대학원 생활, 그리고 정당 정치 활동 등 유사성을 지니고 있었다. 살펴본 논의의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 두 서사의 시선은 각기 다른 개인의 이야기임에도 일정한 유사성을 보이며 서로 교차한다. 그 이유는 북한 출생자인 두 사람 모두 비슷한 시기에 비슷한 환경에서 태어나 성장한 경험이 있으며 탈북과정까지도 유사성을 지닌 이들의 특수한 배경에서 비롯됐다. 둘째, 두 서사의 전개는 탈북 이후 교차성을 일정 부분 유지하면서도 서로 다른 전환점을 맞는다. 두 정치활동가는 서로 입국 후 수동적 위치에서 능동적 행위자로 변모하는 과정에서 서로 다른 지점의 이념을 수용한다. 셋째, 경험과 교차와 정치적 시선의 상이성에도 다시 교집합적인 공통요소가 확인되는데 그것이 고향에 대한 정서와 시선이다. 아픔과 그리움의 공간으로 기억되는 고향에 대한 양가적 마음은 그곳을 떠나올 수밖에 없었던 이유와 돌아가야만 하는 이유를 동시에 배태한다. 그리고 그 지향과 가능성을 두 사람은 정치에서 찾고 있다. 이것이 두 탈북민의 자전적 사사에서 드러난 정치화의 동인이라 하겠다. 이들 서사의 궁극적인 시사는 단지 탈북민에게 국한된 문제가 아니라 분단환경에서 영향을 받으며 분단사회를 함께 살아가는 사람들에 관한 이야기라는 것이다. 분단사회에는 결국, 남북한과 분단 이상의 이념이 존재하며 그 이념의 쟁투 장은 다시 정치무대일 수밖에 없는데 두 사람은 분단을 넘어 고향으로 가는 해법을 각자의 정치를 통해 드러내고 있다.

영문 초록

This study evaluated the identity transformation and the processes that influenced their political participation by examining the autobiographical narratives of two North Korean political activists published around the same time. The two North Korean defectors are active in conservative and liberal circles and share similarities in terms of age, background, arrival in South Korea, university and graduate school experiences, and party political activities. This study discovered the following from this discussion. First, the narratives intersect with each other with certain similarities, even though the stories are from different individuals. This is due to their particular backgrounds: they were both born in North Korea at a similar time, they grew up in a similar environment, and their defection processes were similar. Second, the development of the two narratives took different turning points after defection while maintaining some intersectionality. The two political activists accepted different ideologies in their transformation from passive to active actors after entering South Korea. Third, despite the differences in experience and political view, they had intersectional common elements: the sentiment and gaze toward their old country. The ambivalence towards the old country remembered as a space of pain and longing, conceived the reasons for leaving and the reasons for returning at the same time. They are searching for directions and possibilities in politics. This is the driving factor of the politicization revealed in the autobiographical narratives of the two North Korean defectors. The ultimate implications of these narratives are about people who are affected by the divided environment and live together in a divided society, not just about North Korean defectors. After all, in a divided society, there are ideologies beyond the two Koreas and division, and the battleground for those ideologies is the political arena. The two people revealed the solution to crossing the divide and returning home through their respective politics.
