국문 초록

이 연구는 경찰공무원의 범죄피해 두려움 공감성이 폭력피해 경험에 미치는 영향을 분석함으로써 경찰조직의 직무위험 관리와 공감성 교육에 대한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 기존 연구가 범죄피해자 지향성이나 직무만족 등 태도적 성과에 집중해온 것과 달리, 이 연구는 실제 폭력피해 경험이라는 행동적 결과를 종속변수로 설정하여 공감성과의 관계를 검증했다는 점에서 차별성을 가진다. 연구대상은 서울특별시 경찰청 소속 경찰관 316명으로, 유의적 표집과 편의표집을 병행하여 표본을 확보하였다. 범죄피해 두려움 공감성은 정서적·인지적·태도적 공감의 세 하위요인으로 측정되었으며, 폭력피해 경험은 0(없음), 1(있음)으로 코딩하여 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 정서적 공감과 인지적 공감은 폭력피해 경험과 유의한 관계를 보이지 않았다. 반면 태도적 공감은 폭력피해 경험과 정(+)적 관계를 나타내어, 태도적 공감 수준이 높을수록 폭력피해를 경험할 가능성이 증가하는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 통제변수 가운데 학력은 폭력피해 경험을 낮추는 요인으로, 근무기간은 피해 경험을 높이는 요인으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 공감성이 반드시 긍정적 직무자원으로 작동하는 것이 아니라, 특정 유형의 공감은 오히려 위험 노출을 증가시킬 수 있음을 보여준다. 이 연구는 경찰공무원의 공감성을 위험관리 관점에서 재해석할 필요성을 제기하며, 공감성 교육훈련의 내용 재구성, 근무경력별 맞춤형 안전 지원, 학력 및 교육훈련을 통한 위험관리 역량 제고 등 실무적 함의를 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study examined the impact of police officers’ fear of crime-related empathy on their experiences of violent victimization, with the aim of providing both theoretical insights and practical implications for occupational risk management and empathy training in police organizations. Unlike previous research that mainly focused on attitudinal outcomes such as victim orientation or job satisfaction, this study uniquely addressed violent victimization as a behavioral outcome variable. The data were collected from 316 police officers affiliated with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, selected through purposive and convenience sampling. Fear of crime-related empathy was measured across three sub-dimensions—emotional, cognitive, and attitudinal empathy—while violent victimization was coded as a binary variable (0 = no, 1 = yes). Logistic regression analysis was conducted to test the research hypotheses. The results revealed that emotional and cognitive empathy were not significantly associated with violent victimization. In contrast, attitudinal empathy showed a positive and statistically significant effect, indicating that higher levels of attitudinal empathy were linked to an increased likelihood of experiencing violent victimization. Among the control variables, education level was negatively related to victimization, whereas longer service years were positively associated with victimization experiences. These findings suggest that empathy does not always function as a protective occupational resource; rather, specific types of empathy may increase police officers’ exposure to risk. The study highlights the necessity of reconsidering empathy from a risk management perspective within police work. Practical implications include the redesign of empathy training programs with differentiated approaches for each dimension, the implementation of tailored safety support for officers with longer service years, and the enhancement of occupational risk management competencies through continuous education and training.
