국문 초록

본 논문은 한국 사회와 학계에서 최근 활발히 논의되고 있지만 충분히 개념화되지 않은 다언어주의(multilingualism)를 사회적이고 비판적인 관점에서 고찰한다. 먼저, 다언어주의를 정의하고, 해당 이론이 언어, 문화, 정체성을 어떻게 설명하는지 살펴본다. 다언어주의를 보다 자세히 이해하기 위해 이주 배경 청소년을 대상으로 한 종단연구 결과와 사례를 활용한다. 이를 통해 기존의 다언어주의 관점이 얽혀있는 세상을 설명하는데 왜 충분하지 않는지, 그리고 그 대안으로 등장한 다중언어주의(plurilingualism)란 무엇인지, 이 이론하에서 언어, 문화, 정체성은 어떻게 이론화되는지를 검토한다. 다중언어주의 시각으로 이주 배경 청소년의 삶을 재해석하는 과정을 통해, 한국 사회가 다중언어주의와 다중문화주의를 수용하고 지지하기 위해 어떤 방향성을 가져야 하는지 논의한다.

영문 초록

This paper critically examines multilingualism, which has been frequently discussed in Korean society and academia but has not been sufficiently conceptualized. After defining multilingualism, it explores how this framework understands the notions of language, culture, and identity. To show how multilingualism interprets social phenomena, the study draws on findings from a longitudinal research project on “multicultural” adolescents’ use of Korean, the language of a foreign parent, and English, as well as their identity (re)construction. It demonstrates why multilingualism is insufficient to explain the intertwined realities these adolescents face and introduces plurilingualism as an alternative. In addition to scrutinizing how plurilingualism perceives the concepts of language, culture, and identity, this paper illustrates how this approach provides new insights into the lived experiences of “multicultural” adolescents. In this process, it discusses the directionality Korean society should take to move toward plurilingualism and pluriculturalism.
