미국 국회의사당과 서부지방법원에서 발생한 폭동은 온라인 커뮤니티의 극단적인 정치 활동이 사회적 갈등의 원인으로 작용하고 있음을 시사한다. 이에 본 연구는 정치적 성향이 다른 온라인 커뮤니티에서 정부와 관련된 부정적 사건·사고에 대해 생성된 텍스트를 수집·분석하여, 정치적·사회적 갈등의 근본 원인을 이해하고 집단의 심리적 특성을 파악하고자 하였다. 심리학적 언어분석 도구인 PLAS를 활용한 분석 결과, 진보와 및 보수 커뮤니티는 상대적으로 길고 복잡한 문장을 사용하는 반면, 중도 커뮤니티는 간결하고 짧은 표현을 선호하는 경향이 있었다. 또한, 진보는 분석적이고 인지 중심적인 서술 방식을, 보수는 행위 중심적이며 정서 표현이 강한 서술 방식을 보였다. 주어 사용 방식에서도 차이를 보여, 진보는 ‘그/그녀’를 주어로 사용해 분석적이고 객관적인 접근을 시도하는 반면, 보수는 ‘나’와 ‘우리’를 주어로 사용하여 관계 중심적이고 정서적 신뢰를 강조하였다. 중도 커뮤니티는 ‘그/그녀’를 통해 반응적이고 행위 지시나 요구 중심으로 표현을 주로 사용하였다. 본 연구는 정치 담론에서의 언어 사용 차이를 통해 정체성과 커뮤니케이션 전략을 이해할 수 있는 실마리를 제공하며, 주어 중심 언어 분석이 정치적 담론의 해석을 풍부하게 만드는 데 기여할 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The riots at the U.S. Capitol and the Western District Courthouse suggest that extreme political activities within online communities are contributing factors to growing social conflict. In response, this study collected and analyzed texts generated in online communities with differing political orientations regarding negative incidents and scandals involving the government, aiming to understand the root causes of political and social conflict and to identify the psychological characteristics of each group. Using the psychological language analysis system PLAS, the study found that progressive and conservative communities tend to use relatively long and complex sentence structures, whereas moderate communities prefer concise and brief expressions. Moreover, progressives exhibited an analytical and cognition-centered narrative style, while conservatives showed a behavior-focused and emotionally expressive approach to political discourse. Differences also emerged in subject usage: progressive communities tended to use third-person subjects such as “he/she” to pursue an analytical and objective stance, whereas conservative communities preferred first-person pronouns like “I” and “we,” emphasizing relational orientation and emotional trust. Moderate communities primarily used expressions that were reactive and focused on directives or demands through third-person pronouns such as “he/she”. These findings provide insight into identity and communication strategies in political discourse and suggest that subject-centered language analysis can enrich interpretations of political narratives.
