The Effects of Elderly Internet Use on Daily Life Satisfaction: Mediating Effects of Social Networks and Moderating Effects of Digital Efficacy

국문 초록

This study aimed to understand the mediating role of social networks in the relationship between Internet use and daily life satisfaction and to conduct an empirical analysis of whether the efficacy of digital devices can moderate daily life satisfaction of elderly. Accordingly, this study tests the use of large-scale national survey data collected in 2021 from 2,300 elderly people in Korea. As a result of testing with process macro models 4 and 1, it was confirmed that Internet use affects daily life satisfaction and that social networking has a partial mediating effect. This suggests that the elderly’s use of the Internet can not only prevent isolation and alienation through social networking, but also improve satisfaction in daily life. We also found that the efficacy of digital devices has a weak but significant moderating effect on daily life satisfaction. The higher the willingness to use a digital device, the higher the satisfaction with daily life. Especially, the sense of efficacy of digital devices played a moderating role in inducing significant satisfaction with leisure (B = 0.006, p < 0.10) and work (B = 0.008, p < 0.05).
