동래권번의 역사적 배경과 주요인물 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 동래권번의 역사적 배경을 살펴보고, 그곳을 둘러싼 인물들을 세집단으로 분류하여 소개하고, 그 인물들을 통해서 동래권번의 특이점을 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 동래권번은 부산지역 최대, 최고, 최후의 권번으로 그 역사적 발전이 장구하다. 일제식민치하에서도 우리의 전통예술을 전승·발전시킨 공간이었고, 전통예능교육의 산실이었다. 또한 사회운동과 봉사활동의 모범을 보인 의기(義妓)들의거점이 되기도 하였다. 오늘날 부산 동래지역 대부분의 무형유산은 동래권번과깊은 관계를 지니고 있다. 결과적으로 동래권번은 오늘의 동래한량춤, 동래야류, 동래고무 등의 부산시무형유산과 동래입춤, 강태홍류 산조춤 등 다양한 춤들이동래권번의 역사와 함께 이루어졌다. 본 연구는 동래권번을 둘러싼 인물들을 주체자로서의 기생, 교육자로서의 예능사범, 후원 및 수요자로서의 조력자 집단으로 나누어 다양한 인물군으로 소개하였다는데 의의가 있다. 동래권번의 주요인물들을 통해 살펴본 동래권번의 특이점을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동래권번은 식민지 대표적 기생관광상품이었지만, 나름의 방식으로 일제에 저항한 주체적인 전통예술의 전승자집단이다. 동래권번은 ‘저항적 혼종’을실천한 동래문화의 아이콘이자, 부산민속예술의 수호자였다. 둘째, 동래권번은 1950년대 말까지 가장 오래까지 남은 권번 역사의 살아있는 박물관이라는 특징이 있다. 부산은 한국전쟁 당시에도 임시피란수도였기에동래권번 또한 1950년대 말까지 성행하였다. 지역적 한계로 변방에 머물렀던 기생문화가 부산으로 피난 온 다양한 국악인들과 교류하며 결과적으로 동래권번의음악과 춤문화를 높은 수준으로 발전시킨 것이다. 동래권번의 예능사범 대부분이 서울에서 활동한 전라도 출신 예인이라는 점이 이를 반증한다. 이처럼 동래권번은 훌륭한 예능사범과 문장원, 김동민 등의 든든한 조력자가 있어 다른 지역의 권번에 비해 그 역사가 견고하고 오래 지속되었다는 특징이 있다.

영문 초록

This study explores the historical background and key figures of Dongnae Gwonbeon, focusing on its unique characteristics through an analysis of associated individuals, categorized into three groups: the gisaeng as central participants, the art instructors as educators, and the patrons as supporters. Dongnae-Gwonbeon, known as the first, foremost, and last gwonbeon in the Busan region, has a long and significant history. During the Japanese colonial period, it was crucial for preserving and developing traditional Korean arts and served as a key center for traditional performing arts education. Additionally, it was a bastion for righteous gisaeng involved in social movements and community service. Today, many of Busan’s intangible cultural heritages are closely linked to Dongnae-Gwonbeon. The institution played a pivotal role in the development of various traditional dances such as Dongnae-Hallyangchum, Dongnae-Yaryu, Dongnae-Gomu, Dongnae Ipchum, and GangTaehong-ryu Sanjo-chum. The study’s significance lies in its classification and introduction of key figures associated with Dongnae-Gwonbeon into three groups: the gisaeng as main participants, the art instructors as educators, and the supporters as patrons. The findings reveal several unique characteristics of Dongnae Gwonbeon: Firstly, although Dongnae-Gwonbeon was a notable gisaeng tourism site during colonial rule, it also served as a self-determined group of traditional artists resisting Japanese oppression, becoming a symbol of resistant hybridity and a protector of Busan’s folk arts. Secondly, Dongnae-Gwonbeon is distinguished as a living museum of gwonbeon history, surviving until the late 1950s. The institution thrived even during the Korean War, with Busan serving as the temporary capital. The interaction with various traditional musicians from across Korea contributed to the high development of its music and dance culture. Most of Dongnae Gwonbeon’s art instructors were artists from Jeolla Province who had been active in Seoul, which further supports this. In conclusion, Dongnae-Gwonbeon’s solid history and lasting influence are attributed to its excellent art instructors and dedicated patrons such as Moon Jang-won and Kim Dong-min.
