국문 초록

본 논문은 김일성 유일체제기인 1972년부터 1994년까지 북한영화의 미국 표상을 연구한다. 실상 이 시기 북한과 미국은 교류가 단절된 정치 상황 아래 놓여있었다. 1970년대 초 데탕트와 1980년대 후반 사회주의 진영의 붕괴 등 국제정세변화가 있었지만, 북한은 이러한 전환기에 적절하게 대응하지 못하였다. 자주노선을 강화함으로써 스스로를 고립시켰고, 내부적으로는 새로운 헌법 채택을 통한김일성의 유일사상체제가 확립되며 자주성을 강화했다. 영화를 비롯한 문화 분야에서는 김정일이 전면에서 절대적 통제력을 행사했다. 주체사실주의를 체계화한김정일의 영화예술론을 통해 유추할 수 있듯 북한영화에서 이념적 상대국인미국 표상은 여전히 미국에 대한 적개심을 고양시키기 위한 반미반제의 목적 아래 있었다. 주목할 것은 그 외적 표상에 있어, 북한 배우들이 분장하거나 소비에트 배우들이 등장했던 과거 영화와 달리 월북 미군이 이 시기 영화들에 출연하였다는 점이다. 이는 국가 선전용으로 내세워졌던 월북 미군의 정치적 활용의 연장선으로 이해할 수 있다. 또한 북한 문학예술의 1차 혁명이라 할 수 있는 영화예술론을 통해 기존의 일률적 창조방법에서 나름 진보한, 다른 내용과 형식을 추구할 가능성이 생김으로써 서구 장르영화의 관습들이 일부 북한영화들에 이입되었고, 이는 미국 표상의 새로운 해석을 가능하게 하는 면이 있다.

영문 초록

This article studies the U.S. representations in North Korean films during the period of Kim Il Sung’s monolithic leadership system(1972∼1994). In fact, North Korea and the U.S. were in a political situation where exchanges were cut off at this time. There were changes in the international situation, including detente in the early 1970s and the collapse of socialist camps in the late 1980s. However, North Korea failed to respond appropriately to the turning point of international affairs. North Korea isolated itself by strengthening its self-reliance line. They also strengthened their independence by establishing Kim Il Sung’s monolithic leadership system through the adoption of a new constitution internally. Meanwhile, Kim Jong-il had absolute power in film and other cultural fields. Kim Jong-il’s Film Art Theory emphasized the subject. The U.S. representation of North Korean films still had the purpose of anti-Americanism to raise hostility toward the U.S. Interestingly, in past North Korean films, Americans were played by North Korean actors dressed up or Soviet actors, during which the American defectors to North Korea appeared. This is part of North Korea’s political use of the American defectors to North Korea as a propaganda. In addition, Kim Jong-il’s Film Art Theory pursued contents and forms that were different from the existing methods of creation. Through this, the customs of Western genre films were incorporated into some North Korean films. This allows for a new interpretation of the U.S. representation of North Korean films.
